In this work we focus on the modelling and numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction mechanism in vascular dynamics. We first propose a simple membrane model to describe the deformation of the arterial wall, which is derived from the Koiter's shell equations and is applicable to an arbitrary geometry. Secondly, we consider a reformulation of the fluidstructure problem, in which the newly derived membrane model, thanks to its simplicity, is embedded into the fluid equations and will appear as a generalized Robin boundary condition. The original problem is then reduced to the solution of subsequent fluid equations defined on a moving domain and may be achieved with a fluid solver, only. We also derive a stability estimate for the resulting numerical scheme. Finally, we propose new outflow absorbing boundary conditions, which are easy to implement and allow to reduce significantly the spurious pressure wave reflections that typically appear in artificially truncated computational domains. We present several numerical results showing the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.
This review paper addresses the so called geometric multiscale approach for the numerical simulation of blood flow problems, from its origin (that we can collocate in the second half of '90s) to our days. By this approach the blood fluid-dynamics in the whole circulatory system is described mathematically by means of heterogeneous featuring different degree of detail and different geometric dimension that interact together through appropriate interface coupling conditions.Our review starts with the introduction of the stand-alone problems, namely the 3D fluidstructure interaction problem, its reduced representation by means of 1D models, and the so-called lumped parameters (aka 0D) models, where only the dependence on time survives. We then address specific methods for stand-alone 3D models when the available boundary data are not enough to ensure the mathematical well posedness. These so-called "defective problems" naturally arise in practical applications of clinical relevance but also because of the interface coupling of heterogeneous problems that are generated by the geometric multiscale process. We also describe specific issues related to the boundary treatment of reduced models, particularly relevant to the geometric multiscale coupling. Next, we detail the most popular numerical algorithms for the solution of the coupled problems. Finally, we review some of the most representative works -from different research groups -which addressed the geometric multiscale approach in the past years.A proper treatment of the different scales relevant to the hemodynamics and their interplay is essential for the accuracy of numerical simulations and eventually for their clinical impact. This paper aims at providing a state-of-the-art picture of these topics, where the gap between theory and practice demands rigorous mathematical models to be reliably filled.
In this work we propose a Robin-Robin preconditioner combined with Krylov iterations for the solution of the interface system arising in fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. It can be seen as a partitioned FSI procedure and in this respect it generalizes the ideas introduced in [Badia, Nobile and Vergara, J. Comput. Phys. 227 (2008) 7027 -7051]. We analyze the convergence of GMRES iterations with the Robin-Robin preconditioner on a model problem and compare its efficiency with some existing algorithms. The method is shown to be very efficient for many challenging fluid-structure interaction problems, such as those characterized by a large added-mass effect or by enclosed fluids. In particular, the possibility to solve balloon-type problems without any special treatment makes this algorithm very appealing compared to the computationally intensive existing approaches.
Abstract. We consider the fluid-structure interaction problem arising in haemodynamic applications. The finite elasticity equations for the vessel are written in Lagrangian form, while the Navier-Stokes equations for the blood in Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian form. The resulting three fields problem (fluid/ structure/ fluid domain) is formalized via the introduction of three Lagrange multipliers and consistently discretized by p-th order backward differentiation formulae (BDFp).We focus on partitioned algorithms for its numerical solution, which consist in the successive solution of the three subproblems. We review several strategies that all rely on the exchange of Robin interface conditions and review their performances reported recently in the literature.We also analyze the stability of explicit partitioned procedures and convergence of iterative implicit partitioned procedures on a simple linear FSI problem for a general BDFp temporal discretizations.Mathematics Subject Classification (2010). SUMMARYIn the numerical simulation of blood ow problems it might happen that the only available physical boundary conditions prescribe the ow rate incoming=outgoing the vascular district at hand. In order to have a well-posed Navier-Stokes (NS) problem, these conditions need to be completed. In the bioengineering community, this problem is usually faced by choosing a priori a velocity proÿle on the in ow=out ow sections, that should ÿt the assigned ow rates. This approach strongly in uences the accuracy of the numerical solutions. A less perturbative strategy is based on the so-called 'donothing' approach, advocated in Heywood et al. It is based on an augmented formulation of the problem, in which the conditions on the ow rates are prescribed in a weak sense by means of Lagrangian multipliers. In this paper we extend this analysis to the unsteady augmented NS problem, proving a well-posedness result. Moreover, we present some numerical methods for solving the augmented problem, based on a splitting of the computation of velocity and pressure on one side and the Lagrangian multiplier on the other one. In this way, we show how it is possible to solve the augmented problem resorting to available NS solvers.
Mathematical and numerical modelling of the cardiovascular system is a research topic that has attracted remarkable interest from the mathematical community because of its intrinsic mathematical difficulty and the increasing impact of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. In this review article we will address the two principal components of the cardiovascular system: arterial circulation and heart function. We will systematically describe all aspects of the problem, ranging from data imaging acquisition, stating the basic physical principles, analysing the associated mathematical models that comprise PDE and ODE systems, proposing sound and efficient numerical methods for their approximation, and simulating both benchmark problems and clinically inspired problems. Mathematical modelling itself imposes tremendous challenges, due to the amazing complexity of the cardiocirculatory system, the multiscale nature of the physiological processes involved, and the need to devise computational methods that are stable, reliable and efficient. Critical issues involve filtering the data, identifying the parameters of mathematical models, devising optimal treatments and accounting for uncertainties. For this reason, we will devote the last part of the paper to control and inverse problems, including parameter estimation, uncertainty quantification and the development of reduced-order models that are of paramount importance when solving problems with high complexity, which would otherwise be out of reach.
