The Mofu of Northern Cameroon used to share almost every aspect of their daily lives with insects. Insects were used in foods and folk medicines. They played an important agronomic role, were perceived as omens, and were even treated as pets. The Mofu are, cereal growing moutain dwellers and they value millet to the point of treating it as a veritable religion. As a result, beneficial insects are classified separately from damaging insects and pests. The first encourage millet production, from sowing through threshing and storage in grain silos. The second group is combated using ritual practices rather than trough the use of traditional phytosanitary formulas. The use of the Dorylus and to decontaminate houses suggests a certain knowledge of insect ethology. The Dorylus can be seen as the key to an anthropized reference chart of the insect world or at least as a deliberate attempt to project the structure and behavioural patterns of Mofu society. Today, the Mofu have descendes from the foothills and can even be seen working in the citionship with inies. As a result, they are gradually losing their intimate relationship with insects.
AFRIQUE, AGRICUTURE, COEXISTENCE, ÉLEVAGE, INTÉGRATION TERRITORIALE, SAVANE ABSTRACT.-Farmers and herdsmen: from co-existence to territorial integration. -In savannah regions of central Africa, farming and herding communities cohabit in the same small areas. The sedentarisation of both communities, which are used to extensive land management practices has led them to integrate the two activities. This integration, which is encouraged and supported by the Administration and Development, does not necessarily mean an integration of both territories and communities. An analysis of land management in local territories through benchmark sites in Chad, CAR and Cameroon, enables us to discuss the conditions and processes of territorial integration between farming and livestock breeding when the two activities are still performed by two distinct communities.
