The ability to characterize individual electrospun fibers is essential in order to understand and control this complex process. In this paper, we demonstrate that confocal Raman microscopy is a powerful method to quantify molecular orientation and structure at the individual fiber level using poly(ethylene terephthalate) as a model system. Highly reproducible polarized spectra with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio were measured in 1 min or less for fibers with a diameter as little as 500 nm. The orientation of smaller fibers can also be probed using a calibration procedure. Our results reveal a very broad distribution of molecular orientation and structure within the samples: some individual fibers are completely isotropic and amorphous while others present a ⟨P 2 ⟩ orientation parameter as large as 0.75. The development of this large orientation is accompanied by a gauche-to-trans structural conversion into the mesomorphous phase. Even the most highly oriented fibers only present a very small degree of crystallinity.

Recent literature has shown that the thickness of dip-coated films has a V-shaped dependence on dip-coating rate when very slow rates are included. For supramolecular block copolymer films, small molecule (SM) uptake and film morphology are also rate-dependent, as shown previously for a poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (PS−P4VP) block copolymer in THF solutions containing naphthol (NOH) and naphthoic acid (NCOOH). Here, these investigations are extended to p-dioxane, toluene, and CHCl 3 solutions. The V-shaped thickness dependence is validated for each solvent, but with the V minimum displaced to lower dip-coating rates and thicknesses for the solvents with lower vapor pressures (p-dioxane, toluene), thereby decreasing the dip-coating rate range of the "capillarity regime" (slow side of the V) and consequently extending that of the "draining regime" (fast side of the V). The SM/VP uptake ratio varies with the nature of the solvent, particularly in the capillarity regime, where it is higher for solvents that are weak SM-VP hydrogen-bond competitors (toluene, CHCl 3 ). The draining regime generally shows greater SM uptake than the capillarity regime, in some cases reaching the solution ratio, with higher uptake observed for the SM with greater hydrogen-bond strength (NCOOH > NOH). The variation in film morphology with solvent and dip-coating rate (spherical for toluene; spherical and cylindrical for p-dioxane; spherical, cylindrical, and lamellar for THF; and lamellar only for CHCl 3 ; for a block copolymer whose equilibrium morphology in the bulk is near the cylindrical/lamellar phase boundary) depends on the initial solution state (whether micellar or not and hardness of micelles) and the SM uptake ratio. These factors, along with solvent evaporation rate and film thickness, influence the kinetics of morphology development in the drying films, the point at which the kinetics are frozen in, the effective block ratio, and the orientation of the morphological structures.

We demonstrate experimentally for the first time that the illumination of azobenzene derivatives leads to changes in molecular environment similar to those observed on heating but that are highly heterogeneous at the submolecular scale. This localized photoplasticization, which can be associated with a free volume gradient, helps to understand the puzzling phenomenon of photoinduced macroscopic material flow and photoexpansion upon illumination far below the glass transition temperature (T(g)). The findings stem from the correlation of infrared (IR) spectral band shifts measured upon illumination with those measured at controlled temperatures for two amorphous DR1-functionalized azo derivatives, a polymer, pDR1A, and a molecular glass, gDR1. This new approach reveals that IR spectroscopy can be used as an efficient label-free molecular-scale thermometer that allows the assignment of an effective temperature (T(eff)) to each moiety in these compounds when irradiated. While no band shift is observed upon illumination for the vibrational modes assigned to backbone moieties of pDR1A and gDR1 and a small band shift is found for the spacer moiety, dramatic band shifts are recorded for the azo moiety, corresponding to an increase in T(eff) of up to nearly 200 °C and a molecular environment that is equivalent to thermal heating well above the bulk T(g) of the material. An irradiated azo-containing material thus combines characteristic properties of amorphous materials both below and above its bulk T(g). The direct measurement of T(eff) is a powerful probe of the local environment at the submolecular scale, paving the way toward better rationalization of photoexpansion and the athermal malleability of azo-containing materials upon illumination below their T(g).

The physical properties of polymers are strongly affected by their molecular orientation. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time a new and improved Raman spectroscopy method to characterize this key parameter. In recent years, Raman spectroscopy has emerged as an indispensable tool for this purpose, but its widespread use is still largely restricted by the experimental complexity and the limitations imposed by the standard quantification procedure, referred in this article as the depol constant (DC) method. We have very recently proposed and established theoretically a simplified quantification approach that is based on the most probable orientation distribution (MPD method). Herein, we demonstrate its experimental validity and its wide applicability by studying a series of samples from three highly dissimilar polymers (HDPE, PET, and PS), and covering the full possible orientation range. We show that the new MPD method overcomes the experimental and theoretical difficulties faced with the current DC method and that it leads to more accurate orientation values. We expect that this method will greatly extend the accessibility of Raman spectroscopy for molecular orientation studies of polymer systems.
