Salt-tolerant plants grow in a wide variety of saline habitats, from coastal regions, salt marshes and mudflats to inland deserts, salt flats and steppes. Halophytes living in these extreme environments have to deal with frequent changes in salinity level. This can be done by developing adaptive responses including the synthesis of several bioactive molecules. Consequently, several salt marsh plants have traditionally been used for medical, nutritional, and even artisanal purposes. Currently, an increasing interest is granted to these species because of their high content in bioactive compounds (primary and secondary metabolites) such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, vitamins, sterols, essential oils (terpenes), polysaccharides, glycosides, and phenolic compounds. These bioactive substances display potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumoral activities, and therefore represent key-compounds in preventing various diseases (e.g. cancer, chronic inflammation, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disorder) and ageing processes. The ongoing research will lead to the utilisation of halophytes as a new source of healthy products as functional foods, nutraceuticals or active principles in several industries. This contribution focuses on the ethnopharmacological uses of halophytes in traditional medicine and reviews recent investigations on their biological activities and nutraceuticals. The work is distributed according to the different families of nutraceuticals (lipids, vitamins, proteins, glycosides, phenolic compounds, etc.) discussing the analytical techniques employed for their determination. Information about the claimed health promoting effects of the different families of nutraceuticals is also provided together with data on their application.

Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry analysis was used to examine for the first time the effect of a herbicide (flumioxazin) on a crop species (Vitis vinifera L.) at the proteome level. Examination of 2-D maps derived from chemically stressed tissues revealed the presence of 33 spots displaying a differential expression pattern. The presence of stress responsive proteins in the different plant organs analysed suggests that flumioxazin could act systemically. Among the responsive proteins, some photosynthesis-related proteins, including several fragments of the enzyme Rubisco, were identified. This effect suggests that photosynthesis could be impaired by the herbicide. The induction of several enzymatic antioxidant systems was also observed, probably as a result of an oxidative stress. Moreover, the photorespiration pathway was stimulated, as suggested by the induction of some key enzymes involved in this process. Changes in carbon metabolism-associated proteins presumably reflect altered patterns of carbon flux in response to impaired photosynthesis and an increased need for osmotic adjustment in affected tissues. Finally, plant defences were stimulated as revealed by the induction of a set of proteins belonging to the pathogenesis-related 10 class, suggesting that they could play an essential role in cell defence mechanisms against flumioxazin.

Experimental results are presented from vacuum-ultraviolet free-electron laser (FEL) operating in the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) mode. The generation of ultrashort radiation pulses became possible due to specific tailoring of the bunch charge distribution. A complete characterization of the linear and nonlinear modes of the SASE FEL operation was performed. At saturation the FEL produces ultrashort pulses (30-100 fs FWHM) with a peak radiation power in the GW level and with full transverse coherence. The wavelength was tuned in the range of 95-105 nm.

We present the first observation of self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) in a free-electron laser (FEL) in the vacuum ultraviolet regime at 109 nm wavelength (11 eV). The observed free-electron laser gain (approximately 3000) and the radiation characteristics, such as dependency on bunch charge, angular distribution, spectral width, and intensity fluctuations, are all consistent with the present models for SASE FELs.

The Gewurztraminer (GW) and the Pinot noir (PN) cultivars of grapevine differ in their sensitivity to environmental factors that can cause flower abscission, cv. GW being the most sensitive. In order to further define the mechanisms leading to abscission, and owing to the importance of sugars in the achievement of sexual organ ontogenesis, we attempted to correlate the chronology of flower ontogenesis with the variations of carbohydrates in the inflorescence. In the vineyard, under optimal climatic conditions, fruit set of cv. GW and cv. PN was 82% and 65%, respectively. The sugar distribution was different in their inflorescences during the entire duration of flower development. Between stages 15 and 17, flowers of GW and PN reached the crucial meiosis stage. At that time, the inflorescences of cv. GW exhibited higher concentrations of starch and sucrose, whereas those of PN presented higher levels of glucose and fructose. Despite higher starch concentrations in GW inflorescences, starch reserves were present in the ovules and anthers of PN but not in those of GW. These results suggest that the higher content of reserve and transport carbohydrates in the inflorescences of GW favour flower development and fruit set under optimal environmental conditions. Furthermore, since meiosis represents a key step of female development, the different sugar concentrations in the inflorescences of the two cultivars at stages 15 and 17 could be related to the sensitivity to flower abscission under climatic stress. In particular, the presence of starch granules in PN ovules and anthers might explain the higher resistance of this cultivar to flower abscission.
