Rapid CommunicationPoly(ma1eic anhydride) -Synthesis and Proof of S t r u c t u r e a )
Styrene and a-methyl styrene, both in solution in organic solvents and in the pure state, have been subjected to 2 psec pulses of 4 MeV electrons. The absorption spectra of the transient intermediates formed have been measured and kinetic studies have been carried out. The results for styrene were similar to those for a-methyl styrene. I n the case of solutions of styrene in cyclohexane, transients absorbing a t 320 m p and 390 mp were seen. The absorption at 320 m p is attributed in part to a slowly disappearing polymer radical with a structure resembling benzyl. The absorption a t 390 m p disappears rapidly and is attributed to a radical anion. Various additives interfere with its formation. The effect of styrene concentration and dose rate on the formation of the transients is reported. Styrene reacts rapidly with solvated electrons in methanol, but the anion formed becomes protonated rapidly. I n benzene the absorption appears a t a wavelength similar to that seen with pure benzene. Intense absorptions a t 290 m p and 320 m p are seen in carbon tetrachloride solution. Absorptions a t -320 mp and -400 mp are seen when pure styrene or a-methyl styrene are pulsed. A stable species absorbing a t 320 mp is also present. Values for rate constants are compared with those obtained from measurements of polymer formation. It should be noted that in Fig. 4 of reference 2, curve 1 is i n fact for a solution of styrene in isopropanol, and curve 2 is for pure isopropanol not uice versa as stated.
Diluted aqueous solutions of styrene and a-methyl styrene were irradiated with 2 psec pulses of 4 MeV electrons. The absorption spectra of transient species formed under irradiation were taken and kinetic studies on the decay of the absorptions were carried out. From the intluence of various additives on the absorption spectra and from the kinetic data obtained we conclude that the absorption a t 345 my for styrene and a t 350 my for a-methyl styrene is due to radicals formed by addition of OH* to the aromatic ring. The decay of the substituted hydroxycyclohexadienyl follows a second order kinetics with a rate constant of k rn 109 1:mole-1 sec-1.The long-lived UV-absorption with maxima a t 305 mp and 320 mp we attribute to the polymerizing styrene radical with the structure of a sabstituted benzyl. Such radicals can be formed by electron attachment to the styrene followed by rapid protonation, and by addition of He and OH* to the vinyl double bond.
