This study reports the experiences of a group of people with acquired brain injury and their carers when assessing services in rural Victoria, Australia. There was a low level of professional awareness of acquired brain injury, which reduced access to information and produced poor co-ordination and communication between and within services. The findings have specific implications for rural service providers, in particular general practitioners.
While there are limitations in the research design (including the reliance on staff reports), the findings support the importance of wider organisational factors (beyond training programs for direct support staff) as integral to the implementation of AS. There is a need for further research on AS implementation.
