Vesicle transport is important for cell functions. Rab family GTPases play a critical role in inner‐membrane transport. In mammalian cells, Rab5 is reported to be involved in the regulation of endosome formation, phagocytosis and chromosome alignment. In order to examine the role of the fission yeast Rab5 homologue Ypt5, we used a point mutant allele and analyzed. Mutant cells displayed abnormal phenotypes in cell morphology, mating, sporulation, endocytosis, vacuole fusion and responses to ion stress. Our data suggest that fission yeast Rab5 is involved in the regulation of various types of cellular functions and regulate cell morphology via actin cytoskeletons.
