This study sought to reconstruct the design process of the Memorial Cathedral for World Peace and reveal the formal manipulations conducted by the architect under strategic design thinking. The study materials were the original design sketches and drawings at the Museum and Archives, Kyoto Institute of Technology. This study first conducted an overall survey of all the graphic materials and then outlined four distinctive parts in the cathedral's design process. It further analyzed the first part of the early design of the initial 6000 m2 property, which had grown to 10 000 m2. Based on the chronological order of sketches, transformability and formal manipulations through two successive studies were examined.
The objectives of this study are to reconstruct the design process of the Yonago Public Hall (1958) by T. Murano–Mori Architect Office and to reveal the architects' formal manipulations conducted under strategic design thinking. The study materials are the original design sketches that are in the possession of the Museum and Archives, Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan. Initially, the chronological order of the design sketches was established by inspecting their dates and analyzing their formal similarities. Furthermore, the transformability (variations or changes of architectural form presented in a certain state of design) of each “study” (subdivided partial process in design) was analyzed and interpreted. Finally, the architects' formal manipulations were reconstructed and presented, and relevant design intentions were revealed.
This study was to reconstruct the design process of the Memorial Cathedral for World Peace and to reveal the architect's formal manipulations conducted under strategic design thinking. The study materials were the original design sketches and drawings possessed by Museum and Archives, Kyoto Institute of Technology. Initially, overall severance on graphic materials was conducted, and four distinctive parts of design were outlined. Further in this paper, the first part of design conducted in the property grown from 6,000 to 10,000m 2 was analyzed. Based on the chronological order of sketches established, transformability and formal manipulations through two successive studies were analyzed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
