12 h rotating shifts are common in high-tech industries in Taiwan. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the effect of the disruption of circadian rhythms by the shift schedule on menstrual cycle length (MCL) and regularity of female workers at an optoelectronic company in Taiwan. We recruited females who worked rotating shifts in a clean room environment as the shift-work group and female office workers who worked normal business hours as the comparison group. Every participant recorded their MCL for each menstruation cycle up to eight consecutive months prospectively and provided demographic characteristics, reproductive history, and menstrual characteristics. We collected data on 1,135 and 117 menstruation cycles in the shift-work (n = 280) and comparison groups (n = 49). Whereas the two groups had similar group means for MCL and number of menstrual bleeding days, the prevalence of menstrual cycle irregularity (cycles <25 or >35 days) was higher in the shift-work group ( p = 0.04). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that rotating shift work was an independent predictor of menstrual cycle irregularity (odds ratio = 1.71, 95% confidence interval: 1.03-2.88) after adjusting for shift-work history, employment duration, coffee consumption,and pre-employment menstrual cycle irregularity. Although further study is required to confirm our findings plus to explore prevention and control measures, our data indicate rotating shift work can increase the risk of MCL irregularity.
Musculoskeletal Disorder among 52,261Chinese Restaurant Cooks Cohort: Result from the National Health Insurance Data: Huei-Sheng SHIUE, et al. Graduate Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan-To investigate the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and the particular MSDs to which Chinese restaurant cooks are most at risk in Taiwan, National Health Insurance Data from1998 to 2002 were used to identify MSDs for study populations, including 52,261 certified cooks and 209,044 references matched for age and sex. The annual incidence of MSDs was around 25% and 20% for cooks and references, respectively, and the cook-to-reference risk ratios ranged from 1.29 to 1.35 (p<0.001). The most frequently affected body part was the low back, but the epicondyle was at higher risk (OR>2) than other sites for the cooks. Cooks are at higher risk of having MSDs complaints and MSDs related to the elbow show the highest risk. (J Occup Health 2008; 50: 163-168)
BackgroundTo develop a web-based computer adaptive testing (CAT) application for efficiently collecting data regarding workers' perceptions of job satisfaction, we examined whether a 37-item Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ-37) could evaluate the job satisfaction of individual employees as a single construct.MethodsThe JCQ-37 makes data collection via CAT on the internet easy, viable and fast. A Rasch rating scale model was applied to analyze data from 300 randomly selected hospital employees who participated in job-satisfaction surveys in 2008 and 2009 via non-adaptive and computer-adaptive testing, respectively.ResultsOf the 37 items on the questionnaire, 24 items fit the model fairly well. Person-separation reliability for the 2008 surveys was 0.88. Measures from both years and item-8 job satisfaction for groups were successfully evaluated through item-by-item analyses by using t-test. Workers aged 26 - 35 felt that job satisfaction was significantly worse in 2009 than in 2008.ConclusionsA Web-CAT developed in the present paper was shown to be more efficient than traditional computer-based or pen-and-paper assessments at collecting data regarding workers' perceptions of job content.
Background: The TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) industry is rapidly growing in Taiwan and many other countries. A large number of workers, mainly women, are employed in the light-on test process to detect the defects of products. At the light-on test workstation, the operator is generally exposed to low humidity (in the clean room environment), flashing light, and low ambient illumination for long working hours. Many workers complained about eye discomfort, and therefore we conducted a study to evaluate the tear secretion function of light-on test workers of a TFT-LCD company.
