The loliginid squid Loligo forbesi has a flexible life-cycle, involving variable size and age at maturity, presence of summer and winter breeding populations, and extended periods of breeding and recruitment. This paper reviews life history data collected since 1983 from the commercial fishery in Scottish (UK) waters, alongside fishery data collected since 1970, and examines (a) the relationship between body size and timing of maturation, (b) evidence for shifts in the relative abundance of the summer and winter breeding populations, and (c) the possible role of environmental signals in determining the timing of breeding. Evidence from fishery data suggests that, since the 1970s, the summer breeding population has declined while the winter breeding population now dominates and breeds later than was previously the case. Length-weight relationships and size at maturity showed significant inter-annual and seasonal variation during the period 1983-2001. Males are shown to decline in relative weight as they mature while females increase in relative weight; possible interpretations are discussed. High autumn/winter temperatures (high winter NAO values) were associated with high squid abundance and precocious maturation and tended to favour high abundance in the following year, along with increased body weight at length and a decrease in the proportion of animals breeding in December. High abundance in summer, conversely, leads to a fall of body weight at length in the following year. Thus there may be alternation of precocious and slow maturation, and/or summer and winter breeding, driven by a combination of environmental conditions and intraspecific competition.

We investigated environmental effects on larval anchovy fluctuations (based on CPUE from 1980 to 2000) in the waters off southwestern Taiwan using advanced time series analyses, including the statespace approach to remove seasonality, wavelet analysis to investigate transient relationships, and stationary bootstrap to test correlation between time series. For large-scale environmental effects, we used the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) to represent the El Niñ o Southern Oscillation (ENSO); for local hydrographic conditions, we used sea surface temperature (SST), river runoff, and mixing conditions. Whereas the anchovy catch consisted of a northern species (Engraulis japonicus) and two southern species (Encrasicholina heteroloba and Encrasicholina punctifer), the magnitude of the anchovy catch appeared to be mainly determined by the strength of Eng. japonicus (Japanese anchovy). The main factor that caused the interannual variation of anchovy CPUE might change through time. The CPUE showed a negative correlation with combination of water temperature and river runoff before 1987 and a positive correlation with river runoff after 1988. Whereas a significant negative correlation between CPUE and ENSOs existed, this correlation was driven completely by the lowfrequency ENSO events and explained only 10% of the variance. Several previous studies on this population emphasized that the fluctuations of larval anchovy abundance were determined by local SST. Our analyses indicated that such a correlation was transient and simply reflected ENSO signals. Recent advances in physical oceanography around Taiwan showed that the ENSOs reduced the strength of the Asian monsoon and thus weakened the China Coastal Current toward Taiwan. The decline of larval anchovy during ENSO may be due to reduced China Coastal Current, which is important in facilitating the spawning migration of the Japanese anchovy.

Seasonal variation in hydrographic conditions in Taiwan Strait is strongly influenced by the monsoonal system. During northern winter, the China Coastal Current, pushed by the north-east (NE) monsoon, moves southwards into Taiwan Strait and during northern summer, the South China Sea Surface Current, driven by the south-west (SW) monsoon, invades the strait until the NE monsoon again prevails. As the SW monsoon wanes (in northern autumn), the Kuroshio Branch Current enters from the southern part of the strait, but stagnates in the middle because of interference by the China Coastal Current. As the NW monsoon wanes (in northern spring), the stagnation ceases and the SW monsoon begins. We characterised zooplankton (including copepods and ichthyoplankton) communities during a period when the SW monsoon was prevalent (in August), at the onset of the NE monsoon (in November) and as the NE monsoon waned (in March). Multivariate analyses of zooplankton composition and species abundances demonstrated that the structures of communities are closely related to oceanic variables (such as temperature, salinity and upwelling), which, in turn, are heavily influenced by the monsoons. The zooplankton faunas in Taiwan Strait are a mixture of local species and intruding species, the latter introduced from along the China coast during northern winter and from the South China Sea during northern summer. Our findings are fundamental to practical ecosystem management and an effective long-term monitoring programme.
