Recent advances in computer vision have allowed broad applications in every area of life, and agriculture is not left out. For the agri-food industry, the use of advanced technology is essential. Owing to deep learning’s capability to learn robust features from images, it has witnessed enormous application in several fields. Fruit detection and classification remains challenging due to the form, color, and texture of different fruit species. While studying the impact of computer vision on fruit detection and classification, we pointed out that till 2018 many conventional machine learning methods were utilized while a few methods exploited the application of deep learning methods for fruit detection and classification. This has prompted us to pursue an extensive study on surveying and implementing deep learning models for fruit detection and classification. In this article, we intensively discussed the datasets used by many scholars, the practical descriptors, the model’s implementation, and the challenges of using deep learning to detect and categorize fruits. Lastly, we summarized the results of different deep learning methods applied in previous studies for the purpose of fruit detection and classification. This review covers the study of recently published articles that utilized deep learning models for fruit identification and classification. Additionally, we also implemented from scratch a deep learning model for fruit classification using the popular dataset “Fruit 360” to make it easier for beginner researchers in the field of agriculture to understand the role of deep learning in the agriculture domain.

Introduction and Background: Despite fast developments in the medical field, histological diagnosis is still regarded as the benchmark in cancer diagnosis. However, the input image feature extraction that is used to determine the severity of cancer at various magnifications is harrowing since manual procedures are biased, time consuming, labor intensive, and error-prone. Current state-of-the-art deep learning approaches for breast histopathology image classification take features from entire images (generic features). Thus, they are likely to overlook the essential image features for the unnecessary features, resulting in an incorrect diagnosis of breast histopathology imaging and leading to mortality. Methods: This discrepancy prompted us to develop DEEP_Pachi for classifying breast histopathology images at various magnifications. The suggested DEEP_Pachi collects global and regional features that are essential for effective breast histopathology image classification. The proposed model backbone is an ensemble of DenseNet201 and VGG16 architecture. The ensemble model extracts global features (generic image information), whereas DEEP_Pachi extracts spatial information (regions of interest). Statistically, the evaluation of the proposed model was performed on publicly available dataset: BreakHis and ICIAR 2018 Challenge datasets. Result: A detailed evaluation of the proposed model’s accuracy, sensitivity, precision, specificity, and f1-score metrics revealed the usefulness of the backbone model and the DEEP_Pachi model for image classifying. The suggested technique outperformed state-of-the-art classifiers, achieving an accuracy of 1.0 for the benign class and 0.99 for the malignant class in all magnifications of BreakHis datasets and an accuracy of 1.0 on the ICIAR 2018 Challenge dataset. Conclusion: The acquired findings were significantly resilient and proved helpful for the suggested system to assist experts at big medical institutions, resulting in early breast cancer diagnosis and a reduction in the death rate.

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder in which patients cannot sleep properly. Accurate detection of insomnia disorder is a crucial step for disease analysis in the early stages. The disruption in getting quality sleep is one of the big sources of cardiovascular syndromes such as blood pressure and stroke. The traditional insomnia detection methods are timeconsuming, cumbersome, and more expensive because they demand a long time from a trained neurophysiologist, and they are prone to human error, hence, the accuracy of diagnosis gets compromised. Therefore, the automatic insomnia diagnosis from the electrocardiogram (ECG) records is vital for timely detection and cure. In this paper, a novel hybrid approach based on the power spectral density (PSD) of the heart rate variability (HRV) is proposed to detect insomnia in three classification scenarios:(1) subject-based classification scenario (normal Vs. insomnia), (2) sleep stage-based classification (REM Vs. W. stage), and (3) the combined classification scenario using both subject-based and sleep stage-based features. The ensemble learning of random forest (RF) and decision tree (DT) classifiers are used to perform the first and second classification scenarios, while the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier is used to perform the third combined scenario. The proposed framework includes data collection, investigation of the ECG signals, extraction of the signal HRV, estimation of the PSD, and AI-based classification via hybrid machine learning classifiers. The proposed framework is fine-tuned and evaluated using the free public Physio Net dataset over fivefold trails cross-validation. For the subject-based classification scenario, the detection performance in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy is recorded to be 96.0%, 94.0%, and 96.0%, respectively. For the sleep stage-based classification scenario, the detection evaluation results are recorded equally with 96.0% for ceiling level accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. For the combined classification scenario, the LDA classifier have achieved the best insomnia detection accuracy of 99.0% of the three cases as discussed. In future, the proposed approach could be applicable for mobile observation schemes to automatically detect insomnia disorder.

Pneumonia is a prevalent severe respiratory infection that affects the distal and alveoli airways. Across the globe, it is a serious public health issue that has caused high mortality rate of children below five years old and the aged citizens who must have had previous chronic-related ailment. Pneumonia can be caused by a wide range of microorganisms, including virus, fungus, bacteria, which varies greatly across the globe. The spread of the ailment has gained computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) attention. This paper presents a multi-channel-based image processing scheme to automatically extract features and identify pneumonia from chest X-ray images. The proposed approach intends to address the problem of low quality and identify pneumonia in CXR images. Three channels of CXR images, namely, the Local Binary Pattern (LBP), Contrast Enhanced Canny Edge Detection (CECED), and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) CXR images are processed by deep neural networks. CXR-related features of LBP images are extracted using shallow CNN, features of the CLAHE CXR images are extracted by pre-trained inception-V3, whereas the features of CECED CXR images are extracted using pre-trained MobileNet-V3. The final feature weights of the three channels are concatenated and softmax classification is utilized to determine the final identification result. The proposed network can accurately classify pneumonia according to the experimental result. The proposed method tested on publicly available dataset reports accuracy of 98.3%, sensitivity of 98.9%, and specificity of 99.2%. Compared with the single models and the state-of-the-art models, our proposed network achieves comparable performance.
