Vincetoxicum junzifengense from Fujian Province in Southeast China is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to V. versicolor and V. stauntonii, but it differs by its climber life form, pubescent lanceolate leaf, triangular corolla lobe, dentate corona lobe, and ovoid pollinium. Phylogenetic analysis using the nuclear (ITS) and three plastid (trnT-L, trnG and psbA-trnH) DNA sequences reveals that V. junzifengense is close to V. versicolor and V. yonakuniense.
The complete plastid genome of the type species of Thrixspermum, Th. centipeda, was determined and analyzed in this work. The plastome was 147,888 bp in length with 85,899 bp of the large single-copy (LSC) region, 11,055 bp of the small single-copy (SSC) region and 25,467 bp of the invert repeats (IR) regions. The genome contained 120 genes, including 74 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis divided 18 Aeridinae plastomes into four groups, and Th. centipeda was sister to Th. tsii.
We here describe and illustrate a new species, Thyrocarpus fujianensis (Boraginaceae), from Fujian Province in southern China. Morphological comparisons indicated that T. fujianensis is similar to T. sampsonii and T. glochidiatus but displays distinct differences in habitat, leaves, pedicel, calyx, corolla and fruit. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nuclear (ITS) and two plastid DNA sequences (rps16 and trnL–trnF) showed that T. fujianensis is nested within Thyrocarpus with relatively strong supporting values but only weak support as sister to T. sampsonii. The morphological and molecular evidence both support the status of T. fujianensis as a new species.
The phylogenetic positions of two little-known species of Cymbidium (Cymbidiinae) with creeping rhizomatous habit, C. lii and C. repens, has previously been unclear. Here, we present a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study of the genus based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and seven plastid regions. All analyses showed that C. lii and C. repens are sister to C. dayanum, an epiphytic species, with high support. However, many topological conflicts in inter- and intra-sectional relationships were observed in other parts of the trees, supporting existence of hybridization in Cymbidium but not affecting the taxa of interest in this study.
