Adjunctive HBOT improved wound healing in persons with DFU. Therapy also reduced the risk of amputation of the affected limb. We assert that at least 20 HBOT sessions are required to be effective.
The reversible formation of chemical bonds has potential for tuning multi-electron redox reactions in emerging energy-storage applications, such as lithium-sulfur batteries. The dissolution of polysulfide intermediates, however, results in severe shuttle effect and sluggish electrochemical kinetics. In this study, quinonoid imine is proposed to anchor polysulfides and to facilitate the formation of Li S /Li S through the reversible chemical transition between protonated state (NH ) and deprotonated state (N). When serving as the sulfur host, the quinonoid imine-doped graphene affords a very tiny shuttle current of 2.60 × 10 mA cm , a rapid redox reaction of polysulfide, and therefore improved sulfur utilization and enhanced rate performance. A high areal specific capacity of 3.72 mAh cm is achieved at 5.50 mA cm on the quinonoid imine-doped graphene based electrode with a high sulfur loading of 3.3 mg cm . This strategy sheds a new light on the organic redox mediators for reversible modulation of electrochemical reactions.
Localized nodular synovitis of the knee predominantly involves the infrapatellar fat pad. It may produce symptoms related to mechanical derangement of the knee. Although there is no typical MR appearance for this lesion, many features help to differentiate it from pigmented villonodular synovitis.
Organic framework materials constructed by covalently linking organic building blocks into framework structures are highly regarded as paragons to precisely control the material structure at the atomic level. Herein, a direct synthesis methodology is proposed as a guidance for the bulk synthesis of organic framework materials. Framework porphyrin (POF) materials are one-pot synthesized to demonstrate the advances of the direct synthesis methodology. The as-synthesized POF materials are intrinsically 2D and exhibit impressive versatility in composition, structure, morphology, and function, delivering a free-standing POF film, hybrids of POF and nanocarbon, and cobalt-coordinated POF. When applied as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, the cobaltcoordinated POF exhibits excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performances comparable with noble-metal-based electrocatalysts. The direct synthesis methodology and resultant POF materials demonstrate the ability of controlling materials at the atomic level for energy electrocatalysis.
Fenton oxidation using an aqueous mixture of Fe(2+) and H2 O2 is a promising environmental remediation strategy. However, the difficulty of storage and shipment of concentrated H2 O2 and the generation of iron sludge limit its broad application. Therefore, highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts are in great need. Herein, a graphene catalyst is proposed for the electro-Fenton process, in which H2 O2 is generated in situ by the two-electron reduction of the dissolved O2 on the cathode and then decomposes to generate (.) OH in acidic solution with Fe(2+) . The π bond of the oxygen is broken whereas the σ bond is generally preserved on the metal-free reduced graphene oxide owing to the high free energy change. Consequently, the oxygen is reduced to H2 O2 through a two-electron pathway. The thermally reduced graphene with a high specific surface area (308.8 m(2) g(-1) ) and a large oxygen content (10.3 at %) exhibits excellent reactivity for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction to H2 O2 . A highly efficient peroxide yield (64.2 %) and a remarkable decolorization of methylene blue (12 mg L(-1) ) of over 97 % in 160 min are obtained. The degradation of methylene blue with hydroxyl radicals generated in situ is described by a pseudo first-order kinetics model. This provides a proof-of-concept of an environmentally friendly electro-Fenton process using graphene for the oxygen reduction reaction in an acidic solution to generate H2 O2 .
Diabetes is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, which in turn facilitates the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs activate signaling proteins such as Src, Akt and ERK1/2. However, the mechanisms by which AGEs activate these kinases remain unclear. We examined the effect of AGEs on Akt activation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Addition of AGEs to 3T3-L1 cells activated Akt in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The AGEs-stimulated Akt activation was blocked by a PI3-kinase inhibitor LY 294002, Src inhibitor PP2, an antioxidant NAC, superoxide scavenger Tiron, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAD(P)H) oxidase inhibitor DPI, suggesting the involvement of Src and NAD(P)H oxidase in the activation of PI3-kinase-Akt pathway by AGEs. AGEs-stimulated Src tyrosine phosphorylation was inhibited by NAC, suggesting that Src is downstream of NAD(P)H oxidase. The AGEs-stimulated Akt activity was sensitive to Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) kinase inhibitor AG1024. Furthermore, AGEs induced phosphorylation of IGF-1 receptorβsubunit (IGF-1Rβ) on Tyr1135/1136, which was sensitive to PP2, indicating that AGEs stimulate Akt activity by transactivating IGF-1 receptor. In addition, the AGEs-stimulated Akt activation was attenuated by β-methylcyclodextrin that abolishes the structure of caveolae, and by lowering caveolin-1 (Cav-1) levels with siRNAs. Furthermore, addition of AGEs enhanced the interaction of phospho-Cav-1 with IGF-1Rβ and transfection of 3T3-L1 cells with Cav-1 Y14F mutants inhibited the activation of Akt by AGEs. These results suggest that AGEs activate NAD(P)H oxidase and Src which in turn phosphorylates IGF-1 receptor and Cav-1 leading to activation of IGF-1 receptor and the downstream Akt in 3T3-L1 cells. AGEs treatment promoted the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and addition of AG1024, LY 294002 or Akt inhibitor attenuated the promoting effect of AGEs on adipogenesis, suggesting that IGF-1 receptor, PI3-Kinase and Akt are involved in the facilitation of adipogenesis by AGEs.
