This study is the first realisation of true optical rugate filters (RFs) based on nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) by sinusoidal waves. An innovative and rationally designed sinusoidal pulse anodisation (SPA) approach in galvanostatic mode is used with the aim of engineering the effective medium of NAA in a sinusoidal fashion. A precise control over the different anodisation parameters (i.e. anodisation period, anodisation amplitude, anodisation offset, number of pulses, anodisation temperature and pore widening time) makes it possible to engineer the characteristic reflection peaks and interferometric colours of NAA-RFs, which can be finely tuned across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. The effect of the aforementioned anodisation parameters on the photonic properties of NAA-RFs (i.e. characteristic reflection peaks and interferometric colours) is systematically assessed in order to establish for the first time a comprehensive rationale towards NAA-RFs with fully controllable photonic properties. The experimental results are correlated with a theoretical model (Looyenga-Landau-Lifshitz - LLL), demonstrating that the effective medium of these photonic nanostructures can be precisely described by the effective medium approximation. NAA-RFs are also demonstrated as chemically selective photonic platforms combined with reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). The resulting optical sensing system is used to assess the reversible binding affinity between a model drug (i.e. indomethacin) and human serum albumin (HSA) in real-time. Our results demonstrate that this system can be used to determine the overall pharmacokinetic profile of drugs, which is a critical aspect to be considered for the implementation of efficient medical therapies.

In this work, we report separator membranes from crosslinking of two polymers, such as poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) with an ionic polymer poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) (PMVE-MA). Such interpolymer-networked systems were extensively used for biomedical and desalination applications but they were not examined for their potential use as membranes or separators for batteries. Therefore, the chemical interactions between these two polymers and the influence of such crosslinking on physicochemical properties of the membrane are systematically investigated through rheology and by critical gel point study. The hydrogen bonding and the chemical interaction between PMVE-MA and PVA resulted in highly cross-linked membranes. Effect of the molecular weight of PVA on the membrane properties was also examined. The developed membranes were extensively characterized by studying their physicochemical properties (water uptake, swelling ratio, and conductivity), thermal and electrochemical properties using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The DSC study shows the presence of a single Tg in the membranes indicating compatibility of the two polymers in flexible and transparent films. The membranes show good stability and ion conductivity suitable for separator applications.

Low-bandgap conjugated polymers attract significant research interests because of their broad light absorption spectra in the red and near-infrared regions, making them desirable materials for solar photovoltaics. To date, low-bandgap conjugated polymers yield some of the best power conversion efficiencies offered by polymer solar cells. In addition to their applications as solar photovoltaic materials, nanoparticles of these polymers may be potentially beneficial for cell imaging because of their red and near-infrared absorption features, which are required for significant light penetration into biological samples. In this work, conjugated polymer dots (CPdots) of PCPDTBT, PSBTBT, PTB7, PCDTBT, and PBDTTPD are prepared in aqueous solution using nanoprecipitation. The maximum fluorescence wavelengths of these CPdots range from 800 to 1000 nm. The CPdots exhibit an average zeta potential of −30 mV, giving rise to colloidal stability of these nanoparticles. Dynamic light scattering results show that the CPdots have a hydrodynamic diameter of approximately 100 nm. Furthermore, analyses of atomic force microscopy images of the low-bandgap donor–acceptor CPdots show an average height of approximately 20 nm. The CPdots are introduced to live THP-1 cells, a human monocytic cell line, and the internalization of CPdots by these cells is observed. Confocal fluorescence microscopy images of cells labeled with the low-bandgap CPdots show the presence of these bright nanoparticles in the cells. In short, we demonstrate the preparation of low-bandgap CPdots as an aqueous dispersion and their applications in cell imaging.
