Aborda o sistema de avaliação da produção científica, conhecido por peer review, referee system ou sistema de arbitragem, que envolve o editor científico e os avaliadores. Trata da ética na ciência e inclui tipos de conduta antiética em publicações científicas, exemplos de procedimentos para os avaliadores e as principais diretrizes constantes do Código de Ética da Associação Americana de Sociologia, relativas à comunicação da ciência.
INTRODUÇÃOE m 2015, a comunidade científica internacional comemorou os 350 anos da revista Philosophical Transactions. Editada pela Royal Society, "the world's first science journal" 1 , inaugurou os conceitos de prioridade científica e arbitragem pelos pares, fornecendo modelo para os periódicos científicos contemporâneos. Desde então, as revistas científicas ou acadêmicas, como alguns preferem denominar, se multiplicaram e se destinaram basicamente a promover a comunicação dos trabalhos científicos à comunidade acadêmica e à sociedade; adotar padrões de qualidade no desenvolvimento da ciência e em sua comunicação; proporcionar critérios para a avaliação da produtividade científica de indivíduos e instituições; e assegurar a memória da ciência.As Ciências Humanas foram tradicionalmente refratárias ao uso das revistas científicas. Mesmo nas sociedades de desenvolvimento cientí-fico avançado, o uso do livro como meio de difusão dos trabalhos acadêmicos dos pesquisadores prevalece sobre o periódico científico nessa área, embora esse quadro venha sofrendo alterações, sobretudo no caso brasileiro.
Depois de seis anos de enfermidade, Tema Pechman faleceu nos primeiros dias de abril. Não sem muita luta; lutou brava, corajosa, tenaz e teimosamente contra o mal que a afligiu. Sua extraordinária vitalidade permitiu que trabalhasse durante todo esse período, incluindo quase toda a edição deste número.Graduada em ciências sociais pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Tema profissionalizou-se como editora científica com especialização em ciências humanas, uma área pouco afeita aos rigores e câ-nones do texto acadêmico. Procurou sempre dialogar com os autores e delicadamente chamar sua atenção para lacunas, sugerir uma forma mais elegante, mais precisa, menos prolixa, buscando um estilo para o texto acadêmico de ciências humanas.Seria um exercício paciente e gratificante recolher todos os registros de agradecimentos de autores de diferentes instituições e ramos das ciências humanas em artigos, teses e livros que receberam o tratamento do seu copi, como ela costumava falar. Sua maior contribuição, entretanto, foi ao IUPERJ e, mais precisamente, a Dados -Revista de Ciênci-as Sociais. Como secretária de redação de Dados nos últimos 15 anos, foi a principal responsável pela qualidade editorial da revista. Ainda no IUPERJ, Tema herdou o Índice de Ciências Sociais, modificou seu formato e transformou-o em uma importante base de dados on line, o DataÍndice.
É com muita satisfação que anunciamos que DADOS -Revista de Ciên-cias Sociais traz várias novidades neste primeiro número de 2013. Publicada de forma ininterrupta desde 1966, DADOS passou por diversas etapas, sempre combinando o compromisso de profissionalização das revistas científicas com a excelência acadêmica e a vocação para o debate público.
