This review summarizes the advances in the derivation of one-dimensional porous and hollow carbon nanofibers from metal–organic frameworks for energy storage and conversion.
A novel N-doped MOF-based hierarchical carbon fiber (NPCF) towards supercapacitors was prepared by the pyrolysis of MOF nanofibers. Due to its unique 1D hollow structures, the NPCF exhibits better energy storage capacity than the other previously reported MOF-derived carbon materials.
Amorphous metal–organic frameworks (aMOFs) are an emerging family of attractive materials with great application potential, however aMOFs are usually prepared under harsh conditions and aMOFs with complex compositions and structures are rarely reported. In this work, an aMOF‐dominated nanocomposite (aMOF‐NC) with both structural and compositional complexity has been synthesized using a facile approach. A ligand‐competition amorphization mechanism is proposed based on experimental and density functional theory calculation results. The aMOF‐NC possesses a core–shell nanorod@nanosheet architecture, including a Fe‐rich Fe‐Co‐aMOF core and a Co‐rich Fe‐Co‐aMOF shell in the core–shell structured nanorod, and amorphous Co(OH)2 nanosheets as the outer layer. Benefiting from the structural and compositional heterogeneity, the aMOF‐NC demonstrates an excellent oxygen evolution reaction activity with a low overpotential of 249 mV at 10.0 mA cm−2 and Tafel slope of 39.5 mV dec−1.
Acephalic spermatozoa syndrome is a severe teratozoospermia that leads to male infertility. Our previous work showed that biallelic SUN5 mutations are responsible for acephalic spermatozoa syndrome in about half of affected individuals, while pathogenic mechanisms in the other individuals remain to be elucidated. Here, we identified a homozygous nonsense mutation in the testis-specific gene PMFBP1 using whole-exome sequencing in a consanguineous family with two infertile brothers with acephalic spermatozoa syndrome. Sanger sequencing of PMFBP1 in ten additional infertile men with acephalic spermatozoa syndrome and without SUN5 mutations revealed two homozygous variants and one compound heterozygous variant. The disruption of Pmfbp1 in male mice led to infertility due to the production of acephalic spermatozoa and the disruption of PMFBP1's cooperation with SUN5 and SPATA6, which plays a role in connecting sperm head to the tail. PMFBP1 mutation-associated male infertility could be successfully overcome by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in both mouse and human. Thus, mutations in PMFBP1 are an important cause of infertility in men with acephalic spermatozoa syndrome.
Assembly of different metal-organic framework (MOF) building blocks into hybrid MOF-on-MOF heterostructures is promising in chemistry and materials science, however the development of ternary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures with controllable architectural and compositional complexity is challenging. Here we report the synthesis of three types of ternary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures via a multiple selective assembly strategy. This strategy relies on the choice of one host MOF with more than one facet that can arrange the growth of a guest MOF, where the arrangement is site-selective without homogenous growth of guest MOF or homogenous coating of guest on host MOF. The growth of guest MOF on a selected site of host MOF in each step provides the opportunity to further vary the combinations of arrangements in multiple steps, leading to ternary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures with tunable complexity. The developed strategy paves the way towards the rational design of intricate and unprecedented MOF-based superstructures for various applications.
Rapid and sensitive identification of viral pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 is a critical step to control the pandemic disease. Viral antigen detection can compete with gold-standard PCR-based nucleic acid diagnostics in terms of better reflection of viral infectivity and reduced risk of contamination from enzymatic amplification. Here, we report the development of a one-step thermophoretic assay using an aptamer and polyethylene glycol (PEG) for direct quantitative detection of viral particles. The assay relies on aptamer binding to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and simultaneous accumulation of aptamer-bound viral particles in laser-induced gradients of temperature and PEG concentration. Using a pseudotyped lentivirus model, a limit of detection of ∼170 particles μL −1 (26 fM of the spike protein) is achieved in 15 min without the need of any pretreatment. As a proof of concept, the one-step thermophoretic assay is used to detect synthetic samples by spiking viral particles into oropharyngeal swabs with an accuracy of 100%. The simplicity, speed, and cost-effectiveness of this thermophoretic assay may expand the diagnostic tools for viral pathogens.
