As soon as a patient comes to know that he/she has cancer, the stress starts and psychological intervention is required. The authors assessed how well a cancer patient can manage stress over the course of the psychological intervention. Data was collected among 107 patients during pre and post intervention and at 2 months follow-up. Intervention was required to measures include acceptance of the disease, managing stress, well -being, and meaning of life. Finally, effects of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) were defined in acceptance measured in terms of a significant difference between pre and post intervention scores in the meaning of life and the acceptance level. This acceptance and commitment therapy can be an effective intervention approach for cancer patients that increases acceptance regarding disease and simultaneously leads to improvement in the meaning of life.
This chapter attempts to shed light on a relatively new concept of appreciative inquiry, which is a learning as well as research technique. The uniqueness of this concept is in its focus on positive and growth-oriented changes in the lives of individuals as well as in organizational culture. The chapter attempts to relate the role of appreciative inquiry with some of the well-researched psychological constructs like emotional intelligence, need hierarchy, and self-determination. Studies related to such constructs and AI techniques are mentioned to highlight its contribution in organizational transformation. Though the importance of this technique is primarily in the field of human resource development, it can be applied with equal emphasis in promoting work culture and overall organizational climate.
There is a pressing need for data management and learning management systems. Educational data mining and learning analytics are two related aspects of educational technology that promote an overall effective teaching-learning system. The news media has the potential to act as a tool of learning analytics since they can easily access information at a mass scale. There are instances of leading newspapers organizing different educational programs where students from all the social layers have an opportunity to participate. A review of the programs reveals that all the programs collect and analyze educational data, which can form a research base of learning analytics. This chapter presents the description of three such educational programs organized by the leading media houses of India. This chapter also reflects on the contribution to learning management systems and educational data mining for the improvement of the overall educational system.
