Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is of great importance in rodents for maintaining their core temperature via non-shivering thermogenesis in the mitochondria. BAT′s thermogenic function has been shown to decline with age. The activation of adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase/sirtuin-1 (AMPK/Sirt-1) is effective in regulating mitochondrial function. Exogenous nucleotides (NTs) are regulatory factors in many biological processes. Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), which is a derivative of NTs, is widely known as a Sirt-1 activator in liver and muscle, but the effect of NMN and NTs on aging BAT has not been studied before. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of NTs on aging senescence-accelerated mouse prone-8 (SAMP8) mice. Senescence-accelerated mouse resistant 1 (SAMR1) mice were set as the model control group and NMN was used as the positive control. Male, 3 month old SAMP8 mice were divided into the SAMP8-normal chow (SAMP8-NC), SAMP8-young-normal chow (SAMP8-young-NC), NMN, NTs-free, NTs-low, NTs-medium, and NTs-high groups for long-term feeding. After 9 months of intervention, interscapular BAT was collected for experiments. Compared to the SAMP8-NC, the body weight and BAT mass were significantly improved in the NT-treated aging SAMP8 mice. NT supplementation had effects on oxidative stress in BAT. The concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) was reduced and that of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased significantly. Meanwhile, the expression of the brown adipocyte markers uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactlvator-1α (PGC-1α), and PR domain zinc finger protein 16 (PRDM16) were upregulated. The upregulated proteins may be activated via the Sirt-1 pathway. Thus, NT supplementation may be helpful to improve the thermogenesis of BAT by reducing oxidative stress and activating the Sirt-1 pathway.
Flooding is the most common natural disaster in Malaysia, resulting in chaos and disruptions to social and economic activities, damage to roads and railway tracks, vehicles, affecting the level of properties, loss of life, and rise in vulnerability. In addition to natural causes, floods are mainly attributed to continuous heavy rainfall, rapid development, unplanned urbanization, poor drainage system, and environmental degradation. This annual occurrence of floods has given a big impact on the lives of humans and other living beings. Due to the negative effects of floods, we need to pay serious attention and take alternative ways to reduce this disaster. This study aimed to investigate the vulnerability factors and understand the concept of vulnerability and resilience to manage floods in Sarawak. The researcher primarily focused on reviewing the printed and documented material of disasters in order to find the vulnerability factors. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that nature, human, and governance factors, contributed mostly to floods. The present study shows that vulnerability reduction along with emergency preparedness can reduce flood damages and fatalities. The innovative technologies must have to be considered to reduce vulnerability and build resilience for sustainable disaster risk reduction.
There were inconsistent findings on the network ties’ governance on the strength of relationship thus supporting the need to empirically prove the variations associated with the elements of entrepreneurial networking. This study aims to explore how the ownermanagers decide the network governance of network ties strength in their relationships in entrepreneurial networking. Specifically, the objective of the study is to determine the governance of network tie strength in entrepreneurial networking. This is a qualitative study involving eight cases of small-sized food manufacturing firms in the southern region of Malaysia using an in-depth interview technique with the owner-managers. The triangulation of data has been carried out by interviewing individuals who are seen as strong and weak ties of the network. This study found that the strength of ties was not only based on the strong intimacy and high emotional attachment (SIHEA) and trust, but also governed by the tie’s human capital (knowledge, skills, experiences, networking); their attitudes and values that dominate the contents of network relationships. It also found that these themes are integrated among each other in entrepreneurial networking. This study adds value to both network and human capital literature. Only few research studies have examined the network ties among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia.
The recent evets of flooding, earthquakes, uncontrolled wildfires, hurricanes, and deadly storms in world has considered a serious threat to mankind and preparing for devastating disasters has never been more critical and urgent. Emergency Events Database suggests that by year 2050 the damages to flood related incidents to coastal cities will cost near to US$1 trillion. Risk from acts of nature cannot be fully prevented but needs to minimize and safe the innocent lives and property by utilizing disaster management technique to mitigate the losses. This paper presents Information Technologies applications in disaster management phases such as Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. Geographic Information System, Remote Sensing, mobile technology, drone, and satellite imagery and MOBILISE analytic platform considered as effective and efficient ways of strengthening resilience when disaster strikes and tremendously helpful for coordinating responses and accelerating the recovery of individuals and communities in the aftermath of recent natural disasters.
Abstract. Continuous improvement is one of the core strategies for manufacturing excellent and it is considered vital in today's business environment. Continuous improvement is an important factor in TQM implementation. However, manufacturers in Electrical and Electronic Industry is facing variety of challenges such as, time constraint, quality issue, headcount issue, human issue and competition in domestic as well as the global market. This paper presents total quality management practices in Electrical and Electronic (EE) Industry. These manufacturers have to keep improving in key activities and processes to cope the challenges. Therefore, EE industry realize the importance of continuous improvement in helping the industries by setting clear goals and priorities for the area of improvement. The aims of this study are to determine the main factor in implementing continuous improvement practices, identify tools of continuous improvement that have been used and their obstacle in implementing continuous improvement practices. 200 questionnaires had been distributed to the employees in Electrical and Electronic Industry located at Bayan Lepas, Penang, Malaysia. A total of 41 questionnaires were answered which represented about 20.5% response rates. Survey result shows that teamwork and training and learning are respectively the importance factor and the most practices factor in Electrical and Electronic Industry. Most of the Electrical and Electronic Industry emphasis is on using Lean Manufacturing as the tool of continuous improvement practices. Besides that, Electrical and Electronic Industry faced the problems of lack of budget and lack of worker commitment.
