Complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory is acquiring mainstream recognition in sustainable community building. In this paper, we bring the applicability of CAS theory into sharper focus, highlighting its potential for integrating complexity and adaptivity of community into a structured body of knowledge while also providing a thought pattern for generating, implementing and validating new design ideas. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a framework of design thinking that uses a CAS perspective to aid designers in conceiving new community building design ideas efficiently. Next, this paper presents the results of a cognitive design experiment where functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and extended protocol analysis methods were combined to examine the validities of the proposed design thinking framework in community building. The results show that the Agent-Interaction-Adaptation (AIA) design thinking framework has the ability to promote designers’ extension of idea space, brain activation and idea quality in contrast to a traditional design thinking framework, but it did not significantly increase the designers’ idea quantity.
Computer visualization has marvelous effects when it is applied in various fields, especially in architectural design. As an emerging force in the innovation industry, architects and design agencies have already demonstrated the value of architectural visual products in actual application projects. Based on the digital image technology, virtual presentation of future scenes simulates architecture design, architectural renderings and multimedia videos. Therefore, it can help design agencies transform the theoretical design concept into a lively and realistic visual which can provide the audience with a clearer understanding of the engineering and construction projects. However, it is challenging for designers to produce satisfactory renderings due to the frequent fault data during rendering. In this paper, we use the 3Ds MAX as the operating platform and we present an algorithm based on the Bayesian network to construct a vector representation of the fault data. On this basis, a case study of 3D Max' application has also been presented.
The AIA design thinking has been validated in complex design tasks, which includes three overlapping design thinking fields and uses the knowledge field theory as a theoretical mechanism of knowledge flow among design thinking fields. Meanwhile, the design of complex sociotechnical systems highly relies on multidisciplinary knowledge and design methods. Despite the emergence of knowledge management techniques (ontology, expert system, text mining, etc.), designers continue to store knowledge in unstructured ways. To facilitate the integration of knowledge graph and design thinking, we introduce an integrated approach to structure design knowledge graph with the AIA design thinking, which organizes existing design knowledge through Agent (concept)-Interaction (relation)-Adaptation (concept) framework. The approach uses an optimized convolutional neural network to accomplish two tasks: building concept graph from text and stimulating design thinking information processing for complex sociotechnical system tasks. Based on our knowledge graph, the validation experiment demonstrates the advantages of promoting the designer’s extension of idea space and idea quality.
