ABSTRACTThe objective of this work was to evaluate different water regimes on initial growth and some physiological variables of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) in dystrophic Haplustox. The experiment was carried under greenhouse conditions of the Embrapa Western Agriculture, located in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Treatments corresponded to water regimes of 20, 40, 60, 80 e 100% of the soil water retention capacity. The experimental design adopted was completely randomized with five treatments and five replicates. The evaluations of plants height, stem diameter and number of leaves were performed in six dates, while the variables stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate were determined in two dates. At the end of experiment were evaluated the leaf area, dry mass of the leaves, petioles, stems and roots of all
Growth, productivity and quality of radish roots cultivated under different sources and doses of organic fertilizers This experiment was carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, between August and September 2002, to evaluate the effect of different vermicompost doses and cattle manure on growth, yield and quality of radish roots (Raphanus sativus L.), cultivar Crimson Giant. Direct sowing of the radish was followed by thinning nine days after, adjusting the spacing to 0.20 x 0.08 m. A randomized blocks experimental design was used, with seven treatments (15; 30 and 45 t ha-1 of earthworm humus or cattle manure, and a control without fertilizer addition), in three replications. There was higher dry mass accumulation in the leaves than in other organs, with continuous accumulation until 13 days after sowing, with further reduction, when the root development occurred. Doses and sources of organic fertilization slightly influenced growth, total productivity and quality of commercial roots. Earthworm humus reduced the percentage of cracked and spongeous roots in the doses of 9.2 and 20.4 t ha-1 , respectively. Doses of 21.3 t ha-1 of cattle manure promoted the highest percentage of cracked roots, while the dose of 45 t ha-1 reduced this percentage, when compared to the use of 15 t ha-1 .
Growth and production of forage species intercropped with physic nutAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate growth and dry matter production of forages species intercropped with physic nut (Jatropha curcas). The experiment was carried out in Dourados, MS, Brazil, in a randomized complete blocks design, in a factorial arrangement 7x2, split-plotted in time. The evaluated species were: Stylosanthes spp.; Urochloa ruziziensis; U. ruziziensis + Stylosanthes spp.; U. humidicola; Megathyrsus maximus 'Massai'; Cajanus cajan; and Crotalaria spectabilis. Species performance was evaluated in single and in physic nut-intercropped systems. Physic nut was planted in November/2006, in a 3x2-m spacing, and forages were sown in between rows in March/2009. The evaluations were done in seven periods, from April/2009 to June/2010. The forage species show good productive ability both as forage and soil coverage, when intercropped with physic nut. 'Massai' grass (M. maximus) has a better productive capacity and is more tolerant to shading than the other species, when intercropped with physic nut.
RESUMOSubmitted on 07/07/2014 and aproved on 07/14/2015. 1 Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste, Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. carlos.kurihara@embrapa.br; cesar.silva@embrapa.br *Corresponding author: carlos.kurihara@embrapa.br Diagnostic leaf to evaluate the nutritional status of JatrophaThe analytical determination of nutrient levels in recently mature leaves in order to diagnose nutritional status is based on the fact that leaves are metabolically active and more sensitive to variation in nutrients of the soil. In most of cases, there is a well known relation between foliar content and the development and yield of the plant. However, for a more accurate interpretation, it is essential to establish the index leaf. There are few published studies about Jatropha with contrasting results. In order to establish the index leaf, in adult plants, the macronutrient levels were evaluated in samples collected in experimental plots, in which doses of nitrogen and phosphorus were applied, in two parts of the floral branches (in the top and in the middle thirds); and in three positions of leaves of the floral branch (between the 1 st and 3 rd , 6 th and 8 th , and 13 th and 15 th leaves below the inflorescence). The location of the leaf on the plant significantly affects nutrient contents. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur tend to have higher concentration in young tissues. Calcium and magnesium showed higher levels in the basal leaves of floral branches. Samples collected in the top third of plants (between the 6 th and 15 th leaves of the floral branch) are more sensitive to variations of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization. Therefore, we inchcate the 6 th to 15 th leaves of the top third of plants as index leaves to estimate nutritional status of Jatropha.
Agronomic performance and seed quality of crambe at different sowing dates and depthsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate seed quality and agronomic performance of crambe (Crambe abyssinica) at different sowing dates and depths. The cultivar FMS Brilhante was evaluated in four sowing dates (3/26, 4/9, 4/23, and 5/8/2012), at two depths (17.5 and 40.4 mm). Seeding depth influenced stem diameter and plant population, but had no significant effect on yield. Sowing date influences crambe agronomic performance and seed quality, regardless of sowing depth, and the best observed results are from the early April sowing.
