El Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus constituye un importante recurso forestal en la región costera central, principalmente en la Región de Valparaíso, en donde existen 21.376 ha de plantaciones, distribuidas en un importante número de pequeños y medianos propietarios, quienes se pueden ver beneficiados al disponer de una herramienta que les permita hacer una mejor estimación de la productividad de sus bosques. El presente estudio está basado en árboles de monte alto de tres rodales con edades entre 20 y 25 años, ubicados en la Región de Valparaíso.
Las cortinas cortavientos en Coyhaique y Magallanes son un tema reciente y de escaso desarrollo, esto básicamente porque no se ha puesto a disposición de los productores ganaderos la tecnología que permita un establecimiento exitoso de cortinas cortavientos naturales. Se presentan entonces las cortinas forestales como la única posibilidad de aumento productivo, ya que otra alternativa como las cortinas artificiales no permiten operatividad productiva por su alto costo unitario, su escasa vida útil y su condición muy negativa en el ámbito estético y medioambiental. Este manual, como parte del proyecto del Instituto Forestal "Investigación para el establecimiento y fomento de cortinas forestales" permite la orientación respecto a métodos, materiales y especies forestales que pueden ser utilizadas en esta zona, con el propósito de mejorar la calidad de vida, paisaje y cultivos de los agricultores de la Zona Austral.
Proporciona antecedentes generales acerca de la oleorresina y analiza el rendimiento del proceso de resinación mediante tres diferentes estimulantes químicos.
Un proceso eficiente para lograr que las cortinas forestales ya establecidas mejoren su funcionalidad es la reconversión, el manejo silvícola y la agregación de nuevas estratas arbustivas a arbóreas, lo que apunta a un ahorro en el tiempo de espera, si se consideran los años que son necesarios para que los árboles crezcan y alcancen la altura requerida para proteger la superficie total del cultivo. Este documento muestra el beneficio que representa para el sector agrícola y ganadero la reconversión de cortinas existentes, y también la utilidad que presta al rubro forestal por medio de la protección que brindan en viveros e invernaderos, utilización de cortafuegos o áreas de cortafuegos en plantaciones maduras o jóvenes, y la transformación de un bosque pronto a cosechar en un sitio con alta protección para iniciar una segunda rotación silvícola mucho más productiva que la primera.
El sector agroforestal chileno ha adoptado en los últimos tiempos procesos continuos de optimización de la productividad, a través de los cuales se obtienen productos de mejor calidad aumentando de esta manera las posibilidades de una buena comercialización, junto a un beneficio medioambiental de primer orden. Como una respuesta a esta demanda generada en el sector, el Instituto Forestal lleva adelante el proyecto "Investigación y Fomento de Cortinas Forestales Productivas", que abarca las regiones del Bío-Bío a Magallanes. El presente manual recoge los aspectos más relevantes de este trabajo, y se constituye en una opción para optimizar la producción agrícola y su rentabilidad, con la incorporación de cortinas forestales para protección de cultivos, y su complementariedad con los beneficios medioambientales altamente positivos que conllevan estos sistemas.
