In this study, crude ash, protein, oil, mineral and total phenolic contents, and antioxidant properties of Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Kütz. and Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. seaweeds were determined. The samples were collected from Acıgöl Lake in Karapınar town of Konya in Turkey. The crude ash, crude oil and protein content of E. intestinalis and Cladophora glomerata were 1.92% and 2.44%, 1.63% and 2.48%, 15.02% and 14.13%, respectively. The phenolic content of aqueous solutions was lower than methanolic solutions. The free radical scavenging activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) was also higher in methanolic solutions. Phenolic content and free radical scavenging activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of C. glomerata were higher than E. intestinalis. Both algae were rich in minerals but, while using these algae as a food or feed, attention must be paid on their heavy metal content. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONSSeveral species of seaweed are used as human food to provide nutritional value and a characteristic taste. Edible seaweeds are rich in a wide variety of minerals but they are also rich in other components, such as dietary fiber and resistant protein, which may pass through the intestine without being absorbed and can retain dietary mineral components. Methanol extracts of algae were reported to have high antioxidative activity.
Today, due to the intense pollution in water resources, clean water shortage is experienced in most regions. In order to remove the pollution from waters, many studies are carried out using algae with high metal absorption capacity. In our study, benthic algae samples from different habitats (epipelic, epiphytic and epilitic) were taken from the Altınapa Dam Lake in Konya, in order to study the potentials of heavy metal removal. Some microalgae were isolated from the samples and heavy metal absorption capacities were examined among the pure cultures obtained. Biosorption properties were tried to be determined in samples taken at 5, 10, 20, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes by exposing Chlorochytrium paradoxum, Haematococcus lacustris and Scenedesmus circumfusus species to heavy metals of Cu and Mn. Scenedesmus circumfusus species reached the best absorption capacity for both Cu and Mn metals. According to this research, the algae we studied are of the opinion that they can be used to increase the efficiency and selectivity of heavy metal biosorption.
Water quality parameters were measured in Acı Lake. The measurements were carried out in water samples taken from five different stations over ten months. According to the results of the analyses done on the samples of water, without taking into consideration the differences of seasons and stations, the average annual values of heavy metal concentrations for Cr, Cu and Ni were found to be 0.10 mg/l, 0.11 mg/l and 0.19 mg/l dry weight, respectively. Surprisingly, Co and Cd metals were not detected at any station or at any season. Other water quality parameters, namely pH, turbidity and nitrate, fall in the intermediate value range for these measures. The comparisons of the measured parameters and the metal concentration with the water quality index show that the water quality of Acı Lake prevents the water being used as irrigation water due to high salt levels. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bestimmung einiger Verunreinigungsparameter, derWassergüte und der Schwermetallkonzentrationen des Aci-Sees (Karapinar/Konya, Türkei).Im Aci-See wurden die Gewässergüteparameter gemessen. Die Wasserproben wurden innerhalb von zehn Monaten an fünf Probestellen entnommen. Entsprechend den Ergebnissen der untersuchten Wasserproben -ohne Berücksichtigung der jahreszeitlichen und der standörtlichen Unterschiede-wurden die jährlichen Mittelwerte des Schwermetallgehaltes von Cr, Cu und Ni mit jeweils 0,10 mg/l, 0,11 mg/l und 0,19 mg/l Trockengewicht ermittelt. Überraschender Weise wurden die Schwermetalle Co und Cd innerhalb des Untersuchungszeitraumes an keiner der Probestellen vorgefunden. Messungen der pH Werte, der Trübung und Nitrate wurden als zusätzliche Gütewerte hinzugefügt. Der Vergleich der gemessenen Parameter und der Schwermetallkonzentration mit dem Gewässergüte-Index zeigen, dass das Wasser des Aci Sees aufgrund seines hohen Salzgehaltes für Bewässerungszwecke nicht verwendet werden kann.REZUMAT: Determinarea parametrilor de poluare, calitatea apei și concentrația metalelor grele din lacul Acı (Karapinar/Konya, Turcia).Parametri de calitate ai apei au fost măsurați pentru lacul Acı. Măsurătorile, au fost realizate pentru probe de apă din cinci stații pe parcursul a zece luni. Rezultatele arată, fără a lua în considerare diferențele sezoniere și stațiile, că valorile medii anuale a concentrațiilor de metale grele precum Cr, Cu și Ni sunt următoarele: 0,10 mg/l, 0,11 mg/l și 0,19 mg/l din substanța uscată. Nu au fost observate metale precum Co sau Cd în nici un sezon sau stație. Pe lângă acestea, pH-ul, turbiditates și o concentrația de nitraţi au fost măsurate. Comparația concentrațiilor măsurate cu indicele de calitate al apei arată că apa din lacul Acı nu poate fi acceptată pentru irigare datorită nivelului ridicat de săruri.
Sucul alanlarda yaşayan birincil üreticiler olan deniz algleri, önemleri nedeniyle birçok araştırmaya konu olmakla birlikte ilaç, kozmetik, gıda, yakıt ve tekstil endüstrilerinde önemli rol oynayan ökaryotik ve ötrofik organizmalardır. Makroalgler, potansiyel farmakolojik kullanımları olan birkaç makro besin, mikro besin ve diğer önemli biyolojik olarak aktif bileşikler (örneğin polifenoller, enzimler ve antibiyotikler) üretmesiyle bilinmektedir. Bu araştırmada, Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot 1889’un metanol, etanol, aseton ve su ekstrelerinin kimyasal bileşimi, antimikrobiyal ve antioksidan aktiviteleri (3 yöntem ile), toplam fenolik (TPC) ve flavonoid (TFC) içeriklerini araştırmayı amaçlandı. LC-ESI-MS/MS analizleri gallik asit, 4-hidroksibenzaldehit, 4-hidroksibenzoik asit, p-kumarik asit, salisilik asit, biokanin A ve diosgenin içeren yedi bileşiğin tanımlanmasına izin verdi. Ekstrelerin TPC ve TFC değerleri sırasıyla 10,34±0,13-64,67±0,02 µg GAEs/mg ekstre ve 12,73±2,68-36,78±1,08 µg QEs/mg ekstre olarak hesaplandı. Metanol, etanol ve aseton ekstreleri gram negatif ve gram pozitif bakterilere karşı farklı seviyelerde aktivite göstermiştir (MİK: 3.125-1.562 mg/mL). Su ekstresi ABTS•+ (%70,43±14,85) ve DPPH• (%72,61±11,44) testlerine en yüksek aktiviteyi gösterirken, aseton ekstresi CUPRAC (absorbans: 0,60±0,15) testinde en yüksek aktiviteyi gösterdi. Elde ettiğimiz sonuçlar, C. fragile'in gıda koruyucuları ve diğer endüstriyel ve farmasötik alanlarda doğal bir biyoaktif madde kaynağı olarak değerlendirilebileceğini onaylamaktadır.
