L’adoption en France d’un modèle américain de modernisation agricole a été particulièrement bien étudiée à propos des politiques de motorisation. Cet article se propose de mettre au jour l’ambivalence de ces « leçons de l’agriculture américaine » par l’étude des craintes de dégradation des sols qui accompagnèrent la généralisation des tracteurs durant la IV e République. En éclairant la circulation de ces alertes parmi les spécialistes du monde rural et la « profession agricole » en voie de structuration, il montre comment, des chambres d’agriculture au Commissariat général au Plan, le souci du sol s’immisça dans la définition d’une bonne politique agricole.
