Recentemente a profissão de Fonoaudiólogo recebeu uma ajuda cinematográfica quando o filme "O Discurso do Rei" colocou a profissão nas telas de cinema e na "boca do povo". O fato de o fonoaudiólogo no filme usar alguns métodos não convencionais tornou o filme bastante agradável e colocou o personagem na posição de herói. Talvez todos os fonoaudiólogos devessem mandar um cartão de agradecimento aos produtores do filme e ao ator Geoffrey Rush por sua atuação no papel do terapeuta de fala (Lionel Logue). Mas, por outro lado, esse filme me levou a pensar que, apesar dos avanços na área da Fonoaudiologia, a falta de base cientifica e a constante terapia da "tentativa" e do "acerto e erro", ainda existe. Na verdade, quantos são os casos em que os fonoaudiólogos dizem: "Não sei explicar a razão, mas sei que a terapia deu certo". Até quando se poderá sobreviver com essa mentalidade?A Fonoaudiologia ainda sofre por falta de documentação que comprove a eficácia da atuação clínica e, essa falta, que existe desde muito antes da terapia do Rei Jorge VI, ainda não foi superada. Talvez se nosso trabalho fosse apresentado em um filme com bons atores, e uma produção "hollywoodiana", muitas das nossas terapias e abordagens dariam lindas histórias, não só pelas "melhoras" ocorridas como também pelas "altas" e, tudo isso, nas telas do cinema, levaria a muitas lágrimas. No entanto, na hora de disputar mercado de trabalho, e o reconhecimento da profissão, as lágrimas vão mesmo aparecer, mas de outro modo. Elas virão quando o paciente não puder receber atendimento, pelo fato do trabalho de Fonoaudiologia não ser considerado necessário, ou ainda, por não possuir "evidência científica" da sua eficiência e eficácia. Nesse momento, a história fora do cinema, perderia seu glamour.Mas, para não apresentarmos um quadro muito pessimista, ou mesmo negativo, podemos lembrar o quanto é visível que a Fonoaudiologia no Brasil cresceu muito, assim como em quase todo o mundo. Os fonoaudiólogos brasileiros têm sua profissão reconhecida já há 30 anos. No Brasil, existem Conselhos e Associações de classe que procuram cuidar da situação profissional e científica da profissão. Os fonoaudiólogos brasileiros se orgulham por terem um número que os identifica como profissionais da área, assim como, a Medicina e a Odontologia, também o têm. Nos Estados Unidos, essa profissão também cresceu muito nos últimos anos. De acordo com o Ministério do Trabalho Americano, em 2008 havia 119.000 fonoterapeutas (Speech Language Pathologist -SLPs) empregados e 13.000 audiologistas (Bureau of Labor Statistics http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos099.htm). Além do mais, aponta-se que a Fonoterapia (Speech Language Pathology -SLP) e a Audiologia estarão entre as profissões mais cobiçadas, nos Estados Unidos, para a próxima década. A previsão é que essa profissão, que hoje está em 30º lugar entre as 700 mais desejadas, cresça cerca de 45% na área de Audiologia e 39% na área de Fonoterapia (BSL novembro 2001 Montly Labor Review).Nos Estados Unidos há uma divisão bastante distinta entre o ...
