Of the 56 samples, SO60 was detected in 14 samples (13 products), and its concentrations were between 6.1 and 1600 μg/g. Solvent Red 179 was detected in 2 samples (2 products) that did not contain SO60, and its concentrations were 8.1 and 31 μg/g. All of these 15 products, except for 2, were made in China. The products with the highest to the third highest SO60 concentration (Figs. 1C-E) and the highest SR179 concentration are shown in the photographs (Fig. 1F). These products were fashion sunglass (C), children's toy (D), and vision correction glasses (E and F). Among the products in which materials differed between ear contact portions and frames, SO60 was detected only in ear contact portions of some samples, whereas it was detected in both ear contact portions and frames in others. This study confirmed that SO60 is again being used in eyeglass frames and temple tips that are currently distributed in Japan. Thus, consumers might be again exposed to risks of ACD due to a strong contact sensitizer SO60. In addition, ACD has been also reportedly caused by SO60 in goggles and helmets 2,4 and most recently in protective gloves in other countries. 5 Therefore, we recommend that the use of SO60 should be avoided in products that come into prolonged contact with the skin, not only eyeglass frames but also temple tips.
