L’auteure examine le rôle des politiques d’aide à l’emploi dans la production des inégalités de genre, à travers un dispositif représentatif de l’« activation » des prestations d’aide sociale : l’accompagnement personnalisé vers l’emploi. À partir de l’observation du travail de conseillères et de conseillers en insertion socioprofessionnelle dans un plan local pour l’insertion et l’emploi (PLIE), un dispositif de suivi long et individualisé est étudié comme lieu de reproduction de la division hétérosexuelle du travail. L’auteure analyse les attentes, les représentations et les pratiques des conseillères et des conseillers avec leurs bénéficiaires, pour montrer que ce type d’aide sociale favorise l’imposition aux femmes, notamment racisées et peu qualifiées, d’un rapport au travail dévalorisé et qu’il redouble l’assignation à la sphère domestique, par la relégation dans des formes de travail domestique subventionné. Un levier central de cette assignation est la notion de « conciliation » travail-famille, dont l’auteure observe les usages dans le cours de l’accompagnement vers l’emploi.
