Resumoo aço galvanizado tem sido usado com sucesso por mais de cinquenta anos em estruturas de Light Steel Framing para produção de habitações e edifícios residenciais na Austrália, Japão, França, EUA e Canadá. Quanto ao emprego desse sistema construtivo na América Latina, percebe-se que o mesmo tem sido bastante empregado no Chile para construções habitacionais e comerciais por ser um sistema capaz de suportar com mais segurança as vibrações provenientes de pequenos abalos sísmicos. No Brasil, por sua vez, o sistema tem ganhado espaço nas construções, inclusive com o aumento na oferta de produtos e componentes específicos. Este trabalho provém de um protótipo de moradia popular em construção no IAU/USP São Carlos e apresenta soluções em Light Steel Frame para habitações de interesse social visando menor desperdício na construção por meio da introdução dos conceitos de racionalização e modulação, além do emprego de práticas de sustentabilidade com uso de materiais não convencionais, especialmente telhas e placas de fibrocimento sem amianto, produzidas com escória de alto forno, sub-produto da indústria siderúrgica.Palavras-chave: sistema construtivo a seco, racionalização, modulação, habitação de interesse social, sustentabilidade na construção.
