Des auteurs du xix e siècle comme William Morris, Lewis Carroll ou George MacDonald sont considérés comme ses précurseurs mais c'est avec la publication de nouvelles, notamment dans les pulps 1 américains, qu'elle s'affirme en tant que genre après la première guerre mondiale. D'innombrables genres fictionnels l'ont précédée et nourrie, qu'il s'agisse des mythes et des contes de fées en premier lieu, mais aussi des romans de chevalerie, des romans gothiques, voire des fictions policières, et ce foisonnement d'influences culturelles se retrouve chez Terry Pratchett, auteur de fantasy et de science-fiction contemporain, réputé pour son sens de l'humour 2 et son « intertextualité riche et postmoderniste. 3 » Parmi ses références privilégiées, Shakespeare figure en bonne place. Le Songe d'une nuit d'été l'a grandement inspiré. Cependant, deux pièces de Shakespeare, Hamlet et Macbeth, qui, en dépit des éléments surnaturels qu'elles mettent en jeu, ont rarement eu d'écho dans les oeuvres de fantasy et de science-fiction, tiennent une place particulière chez Terry Pratchett. Deux de ses romans, dont la narration touffue obligera à synopsis préliminaire, se signalent par leur forte relation intertextuelle à ces deux oeuvres, au 1.-Un pulp est un magazine bon marché qui réunit plusieurs textes par différents auteurs. Son nom provient de la matière de mauvaise qualité, la pulpe ou pâte à papier (pulp) utilisée pour cette publication.
