Considérée comme une période clé, dans les manuels de 1882 jusqu'aux années 1960, liée à la naissance de la France et à une réflexion sur l'identité nationale, elle voit sa place évoluer pour apparaître à partir des années 1980 comme une période de transition entre Antiquité et Moyen Age.Il semble important de comprendre, à travers l'étude de quelques manuels significatifs allant des années 1900 à nos jours, quelles images l'Ecole a sélectionnées et choisies pour étudier la question des Mérovingiens et plus largement la question des origines de la France.
