Recent events may have increased the awareness of sexual exploitation in young people; however, the number of young people being groomed for sexual exploitation is largely underestimated. This article discusses the role of the school nurse in reducing sexual exploitation in young people of secondary school age, and explores how those most at risk can be identified and supported at universal service level. It will clarify how school nurses can use their unique role to raise awareness of sexual exploitation and be comfortable in referring to other agencies as appropriate.
