Participants watched videos (manipulating context), followed by a focal group and a questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate tests. Results indicate that health structures SR, however, together with other elements different SR emerge due to the context. In the health context, the body is a vehicle of existence and care. In the beauty context, the body appears as a social object, subject to aesthetic standards. These findings point to a dynamics of social thought, with theoretical and methodological implications for the studies on SR.
ABSTRACT:It is considered important to study communication on the construction and transmission of social representations (SR) and the genesis of those representations on the communicational context where they are constituted, which involves the interactional context where they are expressed and come to life. This research explored the effects of the interactional context on the social representations about the body and the role of communication on the production of different SR. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design with an audio-visual presentation in order to manipulate the context (presenting the body focused either on a health context or a beauty context), we carried out focus groups and free evocation tests pre and post discussion. Seventy-nine men and women participated on the research and were divided into 16 groups. The group interaction was classified and the verbal material of the groups was transcribed and the content categorized with the help of Atlas Ti software, and the evocations done before and after the focus groups were submitted to a Lexicographic Analysis and Camargo, B. In recent years research about the mental health consequences of human trafficking has increased as the revelation of cases became more common in the media and were more present in social and mental health services. Also called twenty-first-century slavery, human trafficking for sexual exploitation can be understood as a generic term for a series of complex phenomena that cover a broad spectrum of issues, such as globalization, migration, and gender inequality, combined with a series of personal experiences, which include several forms of violence and abuse (mainly interpersonal, psychological, physical, and sexual violence). In this chapter we explore the main symptoms of mental health distress in victims of human trafficking for sexual exploitation, as well as some of the cultural determinants for the expression of this distress. Further, we elaborate some of the professional competences a mental health professional should apply, as we discuss the specific idiosyncrasies of the treatment of a victim of trafficking. Finally, we suggest a multidisciplinary intervention with a strong presence of the mental health professional and some of the strategies that both research and our own practice reveal to have been effective in the treatment and recovery of victims of human trafficking for sexual exploitation.
