Land Use Changes and Effects on the Water Balance Components in Agreste Pernambucano A B S T R A C TLand use changes can cause alterations in water regime in various regions of the world. In the Agreste region of Pernambuco, these changes consist mainly of the removal of Caatinga for the implantation of grassland and crops. However, little is known about the effect of these changes on water balance components. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the conversion of Caatinga areas into grassland in the water balance components. For this, we measured simultaneously the soil water storage, water fluxes (drainage and / or capillary rise), runoff and evapotranspiration (ET) over a 24-month period (October 2013 to September 2015), by the soil water balance method in Caatinga and grassland areas in São João-PE. It was found that the soil water storage in Caatinga was lower than in the grassland, due to the higher canopy and root system of the Caatinga. Water losses, via drainage, totaled -103.9 mm in the grassland and were zero in the Caatinga. In both areas, ET was proportional to rainfall, totaling 1,195.6 mm with an average of 1.64 mm d-1 in the Caatinga and in the grassland totaled 1,087.4 mm and 1.49 mm d-1. It concludes that land use changes (i.e., the conversion of Caatinga areas into grassland) resulted in increased losses of drainage and reduced evapotranspiration, which can impact on regional climate.Key words: Caatinga; grassland; evapotranspiration; soil water content.
Palavras-chave: curva de infiltração de água; pastagem; repelência a água; solos argilosos Latosol humic under different uses in agreste pernambuco southern: attributes chemical, physical and water ABSTRACT: The municipality of Brejão has special conditions with cooler and rainy weather and deeper soils and well structured, with occurrence horizon latosols with the humic. So the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in chemical, physical and water attributes of the surface horizon of a humic Oxisol subjected to different forms of use in the South Agreste Pernambuco, and investigate the repellency of the soil water. The disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected in a native forest (MN), pasture 5 years (PA5) and grazing 30 (PA30) in three layers 0 to 10 cm, 10 to 20 cm and 20 to 30 cm and evaluated the chemical, physical and water attributes, and realized an infiltration test with simple ring. Chemical attributes presented typicality dystrophic yellow latosols, and attributes related to the acidity showing significant results mainly in the surface layer. Have the physical attributes that most change with inadequate management are the bulk density (Ds) and porosity. For the infiltration test it is clear the presence of soil water repellency.
Effect of the Supplemental Irrigation on Yield and Water Use Efficiency of Cactus Pear A B S T R A C TThe supplementary irrigation may be a promising technique to increase forage cactus yield, however, it depends of evapotranspiration (ET). Irrigation and ET are closely related to crop yields (P), so the relationships between P and ET result in water use efficiency (WUE). Thus, the objective was to evaluate P, ET and WUE in cactus pear, under supplementary irrigation. The experiment was conducted under field conditions with cactus pear submitted to drip irrigation with soil water replacement intervals of 7 (T7), 14 (T14) and 21 (T21) days, plus the rainfed treatment (T0), in blocks with 4 replicates. Cactus pear growth, by the measurements of width (WC), length (LC), area (CA), area index (CAI) and thickness of cladodes (CD), was monitored. Meteorological conditions along the cactus pear cycle were monitored. The ET was quantified by the soil water balance method. The treatments had no effects on the biometric variables and yield of cactus pear. ET was lower in T0 (406.1 mm total and 1.7 mm day-1), with T7 showing the highest values of ET (664.4 mm total and 2.8 mm day-1). It was observed that the largest WUE (392.8 kg MF ha-1 mm-1) was in the rainfed treatment (T0). On the basis of the yield and WUE of the cactus pear, it is recommended, for the conditions of the municipality of Garanhuns that the cultivation of the same be carried out under conditions of rainfed.Key words: Soil moisture; evapotranspiration; water balance.
Palavras-chave: Caatinga; evapotranspiração; carbono; umidade do solo. Land Use Changes and Effects on the Water Balance Components in Agreste Pernambucano A B S T R A C TEcosystems in semi-arid regions, such as the Caatinga, are being affected by climate change, causing changes in evapotranspiration (ET) and CO2 fluxes. Thus, the work aimed to quantify the CO2 fluxes and ET, in order to observe whether the Caatinga acts as a source or a sink of CO2. The measurements were carried out in an area of Caatinga, during a period of 13 months, in the municipality of São João/PE, using the methodology of eddy covariance, with a CO2 and H2O analyzer and a three-dimensional sonic anemometer. In addition, soil moisture was measured at depths of 10 to 50 cm. The ET ranged from 0.4 to 4.7 mm d-1, with a mean of 2.3 mm d-1 and a total of 933 mm. The ET also followed the variations in rainfall, with the highest values in the wet season and the lowest in the dry season, possibly due to the low water retention capacity in the soil. The variation of the CO2 flux in the Caatinga indicated that the vegetation acted either as a source or as a sink of carbon, with values varying between -4.89 and 6.87 μmol m-2 s-1, being that the Caatinga acted, in general, as a CO2 sink, sequestering, on average, 4.44 t C ha-1 year-1. Thus, it can be concluded that, in the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Agreste of Pernambuco, the Caatinga acts by sequestering atmospheric CO2, further reinforcing the need to preserve this ecosystem.Key words: Caatinga; evapotranspiration; carbon; soil water content.
