Resumo Por mais de três séculos, de 1500 a 1822, o Brasil foi colônia de Portugal e durante este longo período desenvolveu diferentes tipos de atividades econômicas, conhecidas como "ciclos": inicialmente, no século XVI o "ciclo" do pau-brasil, depois, durante os séculos XVI e XVII, principalmente no Nordeste, o ciclo da cana de açúcar, no século XVIII em Minas Gerais o ciclo da mineração de ouro e finalmente no século XIX o ciclo do café. Mudanças administrativas no período tiveram como uma das consequência a criação da Casa da Moeda do Brasil em 1694, que continuou existindo como órgão responsável pela cunhagem de moedas e pela cunhagem de moedas/controle da emissão e circulação de moeda também nos séculos seguintes, inclusive após o advento da independência (1822) e da proclamação da república (1889). Utilizando as técnicas de microscopia ótica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), com espectroscopia energia dispersiva de raios X (EDS), foram analisadas algumas características morfológicas e químicas de moedas coloniais de cobre (1774), prata (1749) e ouro (1809), comparadas com moedas mais recentes, cunhadas após a independência do Brasil.
