Introdução: Durante o período gestacional e o puerpério é importante que a mulher receba apoio pela equipe de saúde e principalmente pelo seu parceiro. No entanto, sabe-se que a figura do pai do bebê, durante esses períodos, ainda é pouco estimulada. Objetivo: Descrever o conhecimento de médicos e enfermeiros da atenção primária à saúde do município de Montes Claros – MG, acerca da importância da participação paterna durante os períodos de pré-natal e puerperal. Material e Métodos: Pesquisa descritiva, quantitativa, de delineamento transversal. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de questionário semi-estruturado, on-line, disponibilizado na ferramenta Google Forms. Análise estatística realizada através do programa IBM SPSS versão 20. Foram feitas análises descritivas de frequência e porcentagem e correlações com teste qui-quadrado de Fisher e Pearson. Resultados: Participaram 53 profissionais, sendo 62,3% médicos (n= 33) e 37,7% (n= 20) enfermeiros. Quanto à participação paterna durante o ciclo gravídico-puerperal, 98,1% (n= 52) dos participantes reconhecem como importante ou muito importante, informando como benefícios, a segurança emocional à mulher (30,6%, n= 53), o desenvolvimento de vínculo entre o pai e a criança (29,5%, n= 51) e a amamentação mais efetiva (26,0%, n= 45). Observou-se que não há ações direcionadas que valorizem a presença paterna, já que, 67,9% (n= 36) informaram que ainda que este esteja presente, nunca, raramente ou ocasionalmente executa abordagem direta a ele. Conclusão: A maioria dos profissionais participantes dessa pesquisa reconhece a participação paterna como fator importante no desenvolvimento do ciclo gravídico-puerperal, no entanto, é notado que durante a prática não há incentivo ou abordagem direta ao parceiro das gestantes.
