From 1973 to 1990, the Pinochet military regime changed various sectors of the Chilean society through the implementation of authoritarian control mechanisms and neoliberal economic policies. The Chilean education system did not avoid these transformations as the Chilean dictatorship introduced several reforms which had a major impact on the working conditions of high school teachers. As a group predominantly formed by left-wing supporters of the Popular Unity Party (1970-1973), teachers were perceived by the military regime as a potential risk to the proper implementation of neoliberal reforms in the education system. It will be demonstrated in the following article that the deterioration of high school teachers’ working conditions was a consequence of the dictatorship’s perception towards this group, which was seen as a risk and a threat to the implementation of its educational project
