A Ilha de Santa Catarina, nos últimos anos, tem sido palco de um significativo crescimento na sua ocupação, fato que contribui para a degradação do seu ambiente e paisagem, rendendo ensejo a questionamentos a respeito de possíveis inadequações constantes do Plano Diretor que rege precitada ocupação. Através desse estudo, pretende-se avaliar se realmente existem incorreções, bem como indicar um caminho para a sua melhor adequação. Foram utilizados cálculos de densidades demográficas, baseados nos índices de densidades demográficas definidas no Plano Diretor de Florianópolis/SC. Excluídas as áreas de APL (área com maiores restrições quanto à ocupação) obtém-se a previsão de 1.269.782,678 habitantes na Ilha. Assim, a densidade demográfica média do território destinado à ocupação é 78,8 hab/ha. O primeiro resultado obtido indica um grande número de habitantes, bem mais alto ao existente hoje. Porém, o segundo resultado sugere uma densidade demográfica baixa para o território de forma geral, quadro que mostra o conflito com a situação existente. A Ilha hoje, mesmo possuindo um número relativamente menor habitantes do que a previsão do Plano Diretor, já sofre com os efeitos de uma saturação populacional. Verifica-se, dessa forma, que a densidade demográfica média calculada não condiz com a realidade. O território da Ilha com seu relevo irregular, ecossistemas frágeis e diversificados, e limites impostos pela própria insularidade, requer um estudo particularizado e detalhado, considerando as demandas ambientais locais e culturais. ABSTRACT In the last years the Isle of Santa Catarina has been scenery of a meaningful growth in its occupation, fact that contributes to its environment and landscape degeneration, bringing up questions with regards to the possibility of inadequacies inserted in the Master Plan which rules mentioned occupation. A atividade turística, consolidada na região na década de 1980, é responsável por grande parcela do movimento econômico de Florianópolis. Essa atividade acarreta várias mudanças na paisagem em que é realizada, sejam elas boas, como a tecnologia e o desenvolvimento levado à região, ou ruins. As conseqüências negativas são ainda agravadas quando o turismo acontece sem um planejamento coerente. A ocupação desordenada da ilha, seja por moradores locais ou equipamentos turísticos, implicam na saturação da malha viária, destruição das áreas de preservação, poluição das águas. Conseqüências estas que ocorreriam em qualquer ecossistema, mas torna-se pior pela frágil condição de Ilha e difícil recuperação das características originais. Para se evitar ou suavizar esses efeitos negativos será feito um estudo da ocupação dos equipamentos turísticos na Ilha, analisando as áreas de maior concentração e prejuízos decorrentes desta ocupação.
