O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a compreensão emocional dos responsáveis após a perda de um animal de companhia, visto que, suas expectativas de vida são menores que dos humanos, sendo, portanto, um dos primeiros desconsolos a serem vivenciados e superados. Todos os pesquisados tiveram animais em suas vidas. Foi verificado que, posteriormente ao falecimento, em 78% dos casos que houve à percepção do luto e todas as formas de repercussão emocional, sendo altamente relevantes, principalmente, como a sensação equivalendo-se a da perda de um familiar para 50% dos casos, solidão em 11% e 9% de culpa dos tutores. Todavia, não impediram que 75% retornassem a ter a presença de um pet em suas residências, mesmo que 27% não tenha sentido seu luto validado ou apoiado; porém, o fato que 73% tenham obtido esse suporte, foi um elemento motivador e determinante. Os benefícios de ter convivido com os animais foi um fator decisivo, já que 90% se lembram, dizem ter sido mais felizes ao tê-los em suas vidas, o que ocasionou o desejo de acolhê-los em sua moradia novamente. 72% afirmaram que traziam mais felicidade ao lar, 13% sentiam mais apoio emocional com a companhia deles e 5% por empatia. Além disso, 95% têm o interesse que seus filhos possam compartilhar do convívio com um animal durante sua juventude. Os empecilhos dos 25% dos casos que não voltaram a ter um animal foram; a falta de preparo psicológico para passar pelo luto novamente, impossibilidade financeira, espaço restrito, falta de tempo e trauma da experiência vivida com 40, 16, 16, 12 e 16% respectivamente.
