Objetivos: Conhecer as produções científicas da área da enfermagem acerca da participação do acompanhante de livre escolha da parturiente no parto e nascimento. Método: Revisão do estado da arte por meio de uma revisão integrativa. A coleta de dados foi realizada no período de outubro e novembro de 2017 nas bases de dados BVS e Pubmed nos idiomas espanhol, inglês e português. Resultados: Foram selecionados 18 artigos para a revisão. Após leitura e reflexões realizadas acerca das publicações científicas elencadas, emergiram três categorias: “Acompanhante no parto: percepção dos profissionais de saúde”; “Acompanhante no parto: voz da parturiente”; “Desconstruindo a hegemonia feminina do parto: ele está comigo”. Considerações finais: É necessário transcender barreiras, sejam elas institucionais, pessoais ou de modelos ultrapassados de assistência ao parto. Os processos de atenção ao parto requerem uma nova forma de gestão e de cuidado, viabilizando o diálogo e a participação ativa de todos os envolvidos no processo do nascimento.
