Le jeune Green, à vingt-trois ans, fréquente les milieux littéraires parisiens ; à un écrivain qui lui demande ce qu'il connaît de Balzac, il répond avoir tout lu. « C'était vrai, assure-t-il dans son Autobiographie. L'évocation de ses choix, ou plutôt de son refus de choisir, atteste sa soif de lecture : l'année de ses vingt-deux ans, il passe avidement de Balzac à Suétone, de James à Tchekov 4 . L'éventail se referme à l'été 1924 autour d'ouvrages religieux, Bible et ouvrages sur la Bible, sermons de Bossuet ; mais parmi les rares romans parcourus en juillet, La Vieille Fille tient bon, bizarrement mariée au Corydon de Gide 5 .
