Schnell focuses on the boundaries and "Schnittpunkte zwischen literarischer und gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung" (p. 7) that register the modulation of aesthetic innovations and reflect the volatility, productivity and diversity of this interaction. The book commences with a section on the literary marketplace ("Der Literaturbetrieb") which illustrates the dynamic relationship between literature and society. Schnell's discussion of the institutionalization of literary life (author unions, publishing, cultural policies, university curricula, literary criticism) is extensive and informative. He traces the increasing mediation of literary texts as products of, and within, an industrialized society as well as ongoing efforts to reevaluate and redefine the nature of relationships between author, text, and reader. In this chapter, and throughout the book, Schnell integrates excerpts and documents from literary texts, essays, speeches and reports which succintly exemplify his theses (e.g. Heinrich B611's famous speech on the "Ende der Bescheidenheit").The major section of the text, entitled "Literaturgeschichte," is divided into five chronological subsections: 1)
