Las creencias son componentes del conocimiento, poco elaborados y subjetivos, que se sustentan más en los sentimientos y las experiencias que en la racionalidad, situación que las hace ser muy consistentes y duraderas en el tiempo (Linares, 1991, citado por Serrano, 2010. Se configuran como "verdades personales" que derivan de las percepciones de las experiencias, incluso cuando éstas son muy distorsionadas, incorporando un fuerte contenido afectivo y evaluativo (Solís, 2015). Las creencias se manifiestan, por lo general, en opiniones, actitudes o acciones, que están en la base de los procesos de toma de decisiones, condicionándolos (Pajares, 1992).Algunas de sus características tienen que ver con lo siguiente: las creencias tienden a ser muy extendidas entre personas que pertenecen a un mismo grupo (Catalán, 2011), hecho explicable si consideramos que se construyen en las interacciones entre sus miembros, que a su vez se dan en el marco del entorno cultural en el que este grupo opera (Rodrigo, Rodríguez & Marrero, 1993, Díaz, Jansson & Neira, 2012. Esta situación refuerza las percepciones de validez y de idoneidad de estas creencias en cuanto a facilitar el entendimiento de los entornos y la adaptación a ellos (Ferreyra, 2012). Sin embargo -y ésta es una segunda característica-, las creencias no necesitan ser consensuadas para ser consideradas válidas, como tampoco requieren de reglas lógicas para determinar su correspondencia
