En plena “plaga de vampirismo” en el siglo XVIII, un benedictino, Dom Augustin Calmet, escribió un Traité para refutar la existencia de los vampiros. Sus escritos, recopilaciones de otros autores, contribuyeron, paradójicamente, a la creación y divulgación del mito de estas criaturas, aportando datos en los relatos que servirían pa a configurar el personaje literario dentro de la literatura vampírica. Nos centraremos en el estudio de dos tópicos recogidos por el abad: las características del muerto en la tumba, y cómo matar a estas criaturas. Constataremos estos dos tópicos en los autores creadores del arquetipo literario del vampiro: Polidori, Le Fanu y Stoker; para posteriormente, rastrear la evolución del arquetipo centrándonos en tres obras de Tieck, Gautier y Tolstoi. Apreciando en nuestras conclusiones que, así como se ha producido un gran cambio en el arquetipo del revenant descrito por Calmet; respecto a la forma de matar al vampiro, las maneras de acabar con la criatura, en los relatos literarios, son las mismas que Calmet reproducía en sus escritos.
Agustín Pérez Zaragoza es, posiblemente, el máximo representante de lo que se ha venido llamando “el gótico español”. Sus relatos, recopilados, traducidos y adaptados, sobre todo de la literatura anglosajona, representan una buena incursión en las características de lo gótico. Proponemos en este trabajo, siguiendo La morada de un parricida o el triunfo del remordimiento de su Galería fúnebre, revalorizar una literatura de márgenes, consumida principalmente por mujeres, así como analizar qué elementos comparte el relato con la literatura gótica en general, y cuáles son propios del llamado “gótico español”, influenciado por lo grotesco, lo sublime y lo macabro que ya estaban presentes en la sociedad española del siglo XVIII.
Partiendo de la más pura tradición centroeuropea, Del Toro nos presenta un vampiro, el Strigoi, que ha evolucionado desde una visión vampírica humanizadora (Rice) hasta convertirse en un monstruo terrorífico que asolará la sociedad actual. El vampirismo es una epidemia que anunciará una sociedad pre apocalíptica, un virus que infectará a la humanidad y la transformará en monstruo. Tópicos clásicos e innovaciones forman parte de este relato de La Trilogía de la Oscuridad, convirtiéndola en una novela a medio camino entre el relato de vampiros, de terror y de ciencia ficción. El mito ha evolucionado y se nos presenta como un ser asexuado, muertos vivientes sin voluntad, con solo una necesidad y propósito: la sangre humana. Del Toro vuelve a la tradición del monstruo del folclore, el vampiro asesino y despiadado, a un ser superior conectado con todas sus criaturas de una forma telepática. Su crueldad no deja reposo al lector, es el animal en pura esencia. Se ha perdido todo el romanticismo del vampiro clásico, y la humanización del vampiro posmoderno; no hay concesión al romanticismo (Polidori, Stoker), esta criatura solo es pura malignidad y animalidad.
El espectro, sombra, espíritu, larva, revenant, o fantasma, forma parte de la memoria colectiva de la humanidad desde la antigüedad, ya que el miedo al retorno de los muertos siempre ha sido un miedo antropológico y ancestral. De este modo encontramos que el fantasma ya estaba presente en muchos de los cuentos y relatos del siglo XVI. Analizaremos la producción hispánica de tres autores, para estudiar tres historias de fantasmas contextualizadas en casas, cuevas, o grandes mansiones. Describiremos escenografías, ambientes, motivos y sensaciones que contribuyeron a la creación de un imaginario que, posteriormente, dará lugar a la literatura gótica. De este modo, exploraremos el goticismo de la literatura de fantasmas del XVI.
