El hígado es el órgano más voluminoso del organismo y representa el 2% del peso corporal total, es decir, alrededor de 1,5 kg para un adulto tipo. Se caracteriza por un doble aporte sanguíneo: la arteria hepática le suministra sangre procedente de la circulación general mientras que la vena porta le envía sangre del bazo, del estómago, del páncreas y, sobre todo, del intestino, lo que le permite recibir los elementos nutritivos absorbidos por éste último antes de su paso a la circulación general. Toda la sangre que alcanza el hígado por esta doble vascularización se mezcla en los sinusoides hepáticos y es drenada por las venas centrolobulillares que convergen para formar la vena suprahepática (Figura 1).
