El presente trabajo describe y analiza las transformaciones y diversificación de la producción dramático-escénica presencial chilena del período 1980-2010. Esto es, antes y después de la recuperación parcial, controversial, de la institucionalidad democrática en 1990. Lo anterior bajo la perspectiva de un doble marco histórico: (i) la conformación de un espacio comunicativo público "intermedio" y "de abajo", crítico o resistente a los efectos sociales y culturales generados por el orden dictatorial y luego el civil que le sucedió, en virtud del principio igualitario que toda promesa democrática conflictivamente invoca en numerosos agentes sociales subalternos; y (ii) dentro de dicho espacio público, la ampliación del uso social de los lenguajes dramático-escénicos o "performativos" ya sea bajo la forma estilizada de teatro "de arte" convencional o de vanguardia, ya sea de manifestaciones colectivas menos elaboradas de auto-expresión identitaria o social,, de celebración o protesta cívica.
