INTRODUCCIÓN Durante dos décadas, varios países han sufrido una epidemia de enfermedad renal crónica inexplicable por causas tradicionales. Típicamente, es una nefritis crónica túbulointersticial, que afecta predominantemente a jóvenes del sexo masculino que trabajan en la agricultura y se ha reportado en varios países de América Central, así como en Sri Lanka, India y Egipto. Los estudios recientes efectuados en El Salvador también han reportado la enfermedad en trabajadores masculinos no agrícolas y en mujeres, trabajen o no en la agricultura. La información epidemiológica respecto a si esta enfermedad afecta poblaciones pediátricas prácticamente no existe. A nivel global, los estimados de prevalencia en poblaciones pediátricas de la enfermedad renal crónica van de 21 a 108 casos por millón de habitantes.
