Las crisis económicas se han nombrado como catástrofes, según manifestó John Maynard Keynes en La gran recesión de 1930, en las que las personas empezaban a tomar conciencia de que algo sucedía sin conocer las razones, pero encumbrando los temores generales y las angustias particulares de la época. Adelantándonos un poco en el tiempo, y presentando una de las crisis más cercanas que tuviera lugar en el 2008, se hizo aún más celebre y vigente lo que manifestaba Keynes, en tanto que «se empieza a dudar del futuro». Argumentaba para aquel entonces, durante la crisis de los años 30 del siglo pasado, que las personas se encontraban entre el despertar de un sueño de crecimiento económico y especulación y el «sumergirse en una pesadilla» de grandes proporciones debido a las consecuencias generadas por el desconocimiento de una maquinaria que no se sabe manejar y de la cual se perdió el control; con esto se hace referencia a las finanzas internacionales y a la economía mundial. En estos tiempos convulsionados por los mercados especulativos, las guerras comerciales y la lucha por la hegemonía de la economía mundial, se alzan voces de diversas autoridades económicas que proponen llamados a la cordura, a la razón y, especialmente, a la ética. Este último llamado alberga en sí mismo a la cordura y la razón, medidas suficientes para proponer alternativas que mengüen las complejidades actuales en la lucha por el dominio hegemónico de los mercados y la delicada cornisa por la que caminan las naciones en busca del poder económico y territorial. Tales poderes y hegemonías pueden ser asociadas con la sociedad del consumo, en donde, entre muchos, nos encontramos con el agotamiento indiscriminado de los recursos naturales y la deforestación, la explotación minera y de los combustibles fósiles (con procesos productivos de desperdicio), acciones que han acelerado los efectos en el cambio climático, los aumentos de la pobreza y una desigualdad en ridículas proporciones.
El tema ambiental genera preocupación a diferentes actores de la sociedad, ya que los escenarios que se presentan no son los más halagüeños para asegurar la supervivencia humana. Expertos sugieren que la problemática ambiental es el resultado del consumo excesivo y la falta de cultura ambiental ciudadana. La reflexión económica no es tarea que ocupe únicamente a los economistas, su apertura convoca la participación activa de otras disciplinas, lo que permite la creación de un discurso crítico y holístico más apropiado y acorde a la sociedad contemporánea. Tanto así, la política económica, la planificación del territorio, el análisis de la productividad de los factores y la industria, la formación idónea del talento humano y la relación economía y medioambiente son de tratamiento transversal y se construyen de manera interdisciplinar. Los objetivos que la ciencia económica ha percibido como principales tópicos de análisis, se han transformado en el tiempo, aunque muchas de las percepciones iniciales del debate de antaño, parecieran ser invariablemente relevantes para la sociedad. La naturaleza del crecimiento económico bajo las necesidades actuales, en el marco de la sostenibilidad, trae consigo reflexiones alrededor de temas diversos. La percepción deshumanizada de la economía de mercado como herramienta de asignación de los recursos, la necesidad de implementar alternativas de comercio justo (moneda social) y el logro de acciones conjuntas para potenciar las capacidades sociales locales (economías sociales y solidarias), se consideran de interés para el logro de mejores niveles de desarrollo. Cuestiones que años atrás se presentaban como eminentemente concernientes a la técnica, se convierten en la actualidad en intensos y acalorados debates de orden filosófico y moral. El logro de un crecimiento sostenido, como se mencionó anteriormente, coherente con el agotamiento de los recursos naturales, con miras al desarrollo y, centrado en el reconocimiento de valores y de la persona humana, pareciera cobrar relevancia a igual tono que las cuestiones eminentemente instrumentales.
