Contudo, o papel das organizações tem extrapolado o de simples instrumento para satisfazer os anseios dos seus membros e da sociedade. Na realidade, à medida que as organizações crescem e se expandem para todos os domínios da vida social, decrescem para os indivíduos as opções de vida extra-organizacional, obrigando-os à criação de uma série de mecanismos de acomodação para conviver com a "sociedade organizacional" dos nossos dias.' Ao longo do processo de evolução dessa sociedade, as organizações têm produzido disfunções, mitos, rituais, processualísticos e burocráticos, bem como contribuído para a alienação e outros efeitos desestruturantes sobre os seus membros: instala-se assim um intenso processo de deterioração, que põe em risco a própria sobrevivência de pelo menos algumas delas.O autor concorda com o ponto de vista advogado por Argyris (1970, p. 3) de que as causas básicas da deterioração organizacional estão construídas dentro da própria concepção da estrutura organizacional, na 53 tecnologia, nos controles administrativos e nos estilos de liderança utilizados pelas pessoas em posição de poder nas organizações. Contudo, talvez seja mais importante o fato de que os mais altos dirigentes das organizações não têm consciência deste fenômeno, o que por si só constitui grave disfunção.É intenção deste artigo encaminhar o debate dessa matéria entre nós, sugerindo uma classificação e apresentando uma série de exemplos de disfunções, por intermédio das quais o processo de deterioração se manifesta e se realiza.
