Com a utilização de imagens de satélite de uma mesma região da Terra, espaçadas no tempo, e das ferramentas computacionais presentes nos sistemas de informação geográficos (SIGs) há a possibilidade que sejam elaboradas comparações, utilizando a dimensão temporal como uma qualidade dos dados adquiridos nos distintos instantes. Esta função do sensoriamento remoto, destinada à análise dos fenômenos temporais, cíclicos ou não, é conhecida por Detecção de Mudanças no Uso e Cobertura da Terra ou ainda Avaliação Temporal. O presente estudo objetivou realizar a análise temporal e espacial da paisagem do município de Bom Retiro do Sul, localizado no nordeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A análise temporal foi realizada a partir de imagens do satélite Landsat 5, dos anos de 1989, 1995, 1999, 2005 e 2011. Os resultados apontaram que as florestas estão aumentando e as áreas de uso agropecuário estão diminuindo no município em estudo. No período analisado, as florestas nativas aumentaram 55%, as florestas industriais aumentaram 106%, as áreas de uso agropecuário tiveram redução de 21,26% e a área urbanizada aumentou 132,57 %.
