This study evaluated the correlation between the presence of black extrinsic tooth stains and caries in Brazilian schoolchildren. The target population consisted of 263 children aged 6-12 years. Clinical examinations were performed by four dentists calibrated for the World Health Organization criteria for caries diagnosis. The c(2) test was used to compare the prevalence of caries between groups of children with and without black tooth stains. Spearman's correlation test was used to analyze the relationship between the presence of black stains and caries severity. Black stains were observed in 14.8% of the children. The number of children with caries-free permanent dentition was not statistically different between groups. The mean DMF-T was 1.46 +/- 1.39 for children with black stains and 2.42 +/- 2.09 for children without black stains. A negative correlation was observed between the presence (r = -0.16; p<0.05) and severity (r = -0.15; p<0.01) of black stains and DMF-T.
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the preliminary results of a school-based oral health educational strategy adopted in public primary schools from the city of Maringa, State of Parana, Brazil. The study sample was composed by 556 children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years old, 124 schoolteachers and a group of 55 mothers. The educational approach was implemented for 18 months and consisted of reinforcements of interventions addressed to students and schoolteachers at school level and few activities targeted at the mothers, performed by means of home visits. Baseline and follow-up interviews focused on oral health care were undertaken for the entire study population. As a stimulus for the students to achieve proper oral hygiene habits, the simplified oral hygiene index was assessed at three different moments. A statistically significant improvement in their oral hygiene index (p<0.001) was recorded. The results achieved suggest an encouraging tendency towards the improvement in the levels of oral health care among the school-age youths studied. They also point out the need of intensifying the preparation of schoolteachers in oral health topics, as well the instructions to the mothers for their oral health care. Moreover, they highlight the importance of the continuous implementation of school-based programs to promote the oral health.
ABSTRACT:The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and severity of dental caries as well as the needs for dental treatment in 18-year-old males from Maringá, PR, Brazil. The association of dental caries experience with socioeconomic variables was also tested. A cross sectional study was conducted in a random sample of 241 conscripts of the Brazilian Army. The adopted diagnosis criteria were those proposed by the World Health Organization. A socioeconomic questionnaire was utilized to determine family income and the criterion of the Brazil Economic Classification of the National Association of Research Enterprises. Associations among caries prevalence, DMF-T index, treatment needs and socioeconomic variables were evaluated by means of the Chi-Square, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Caries prevalence was 82.6% and the mean DMF-T index was 4.6. Only a mean of 0.8 tooth per individual presented treatment needs. Significant statistical differences were found in caries prevalence and severity (DMF-T). The worst results were observed in the groups of lower income and purchasing power, indicating a need for the implementation of social policies that address these populations aiming at diminishing the existing differences in the health-disease process indicators. On the other hand, treatment needs were only associated to the Brazil Economic Classification Criterion variable (p < 0.05). DESCRIPTORS: Dental caries; Epidemiology; DMF index; Social conditions. D...
The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate a possible remineralization of human carious dentin by calcium hydroxide. Thirtynine freshly extracted human permanent and deciduous carious teeth were split into two halves. One half was used as control and the other as experimental. In the latter, a cavity was prepared and the remaining bottom layer of demineralized dentin capped with chemically pure calcium hydroxide. The experimental samples were stored at 37ºC. Time intervals were 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks. All tooth halves were sawed and ground to plano-parallel sections with a thickness varying from 75 to 117 µm. Qualitative microradiographs showed a qualitative increase in radiopacity of the calcium hydroxide treated samples. Quantitative microradiography showed a statistically significant increase in total mineral content in the experimental samples compared to the control samples. These results indicate an in vitro remineralization of carious dentin by calcium hydroxide.
The main aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate a possible remineralization of human carious dentin by means of chemical and microradiographic studies. Eighty-six samples of carious dentin were removed from 36 permanent teeth of 24 patients. These were divided into untreated (control) and chemically pure calcium hydroxide-capped (experimental) samples and analyzed at intervals varying from 10 to 120 days. They were classified according to depth of caries and degree of dentin softening and evaluated in relation to weight, phosphorus concentration, qualitative and quantitative microradiography and absolute values of total mineral content. One of two halves of each sample was selected for chemical studies and the other for total content of mineral salts. Experimental samples were examined with a light microscope and the results obtained showed a qualitative increase in radiopacity. Quantitatively, it was observed that, in the case of samples analyzed for phosphorus concentration, the average mean of differences in percentage increase after treatment was 9.6%, while for the samples evaluated microradiographically for total mineral content, it was 22.29%. In both cases, the differences were statistically significant.
