à des foyers de petits agriculteurs, 10 % à des familles d'éleveurs nomades, de pêcheurs ou d'exploitants de ressources forestières, et 20 % à des ménages d'ouvriers agricoles ou autres ruraux sans terre. Quelque 70 % des gens qui ont faim dans le monde appartiennent donc à des familles paysannes. Cette situation est paradoxale en apparence seulement. Inégalités agricolesMalgré un exode rural massif à l'échelle du monde, les ruraux et les agriculteurs sont encore très nombreux : la population rurale s'élève à 3,4 milliards de personnes, soit un peu plus de 50 % de la population mondiale ; la population agricole totale (active et non active) se monte à 2,8 milliards de personnes, soit un peu plus de 40 % de cette même population mondiale ; quant à la population agricole active, elle compte 1,38 milliard de personnes, soit 42 % de la population active du monde (FAOSTAT).Or, pour ces 1,38 milliard de personnes, travaillant à plein temps ou à temps partiel dans l'agriculture (soit l'équivalent d'environ 750 millions d'unités de travail agricole à plein temps), on ne compte dans le monde que 28 millions de tracteurs, soit 2 % du nombre des actifs agricoles, et 250 millions d'animaux de travail, soit 18 % du nombre des actifs agricoles. Cela signifie qu'environ un milliard de paysans travaillent quasi-exclusivement avec des outils manuels (bêche, houe, machette, faucille…) et ne peuvent guère cultiver plus de 1 hectare par travailleur. Parmi eux, la moitié à peu près utilise couramment des intrants efficaces (semences sélectionnées, engrais minéraux, pesticides), tandis que l'autre moitié, soit environ 500 millions de personnes, n'en utilisent pratiquement pas et ne peuvent donc guère produire plus de 1 tonne d'équivalent-céréales 4 par hectare.Encore faut-il ajouter que dans de nombreux pays d'Amérique latine, du Sud de l'Afrique ou d'Europe de l'Est, beaucoup de paysans sont toujours privés de terre par de grands domaines de plusieurs milliers ou dizaines de milliers d'hectares.
